GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Katie
Heffner (Easton, PA/Easton) tallied a team-high 47 kills and hit .406
to help Gettysburg finish second at the Battlefield Classic on Saturday.
The Bullets reached the championship match with wins over
Richard Stockton (3-1) and Elizabethtown (3-0) before dropping a hard-fought 3-2
decision to Eastern. In the finals, the Eagles erased a 2-1 deficit to win their
third Classic title in the past four years.
Erica
Rau (Oakland Park, FL/Pine Crest) hit .329 with 34 kills on Saturday while
Hillary Prutzman (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) added 27 kills. Rau and
Prutzman led Gettysburg (5-4) with 12 and 10 total blocks, respectively.
Shannan Smith (Milmont Park, PA/Ridley) led
the team with 113 assists in the three matches to earn a spot on the all-tournament
team. Steph Vial (Hanover, PA/Delone Catholic) posted team highs
with 40 digs and nine service aces.
The
Bullets used 19 kills and a .515 hitting performance from Heffner to open the
day with a 30-27, 28-30, 30-24, 30-26 win over Richard Stockton. Prutzman hit
.476 with 12 kills, helping Gettysburg convert its attacks at a .313 clip.
Heffner put down 10 more kills in the Bullets’ 30-16, 30-22,
30-27 sweep of Elizabethtown while Prutzman killed 9 of 12 attacks with only one
error (.667).
In the finals,
Gettysburg rallied from a 29-24 deficit to win game two 31-29 and took a 2-1 lead
against Eastern with a decisive 30-16 game three. The Bullets led the fourth game
21-15, but two kills apiece from four different players keyed a 15-3 Eagles’ run
that tied the match at 2.
Back-to-back
kills started a 5-0 run that snapped a 4-all tie and put Eastern ahead to stay.
Jacey Bray sealed the 15-11 game-five victory and the championship
with a kill down the middle.
Heffner
and Rau collected 18 kills apiece for Gettysburg while Smith put up 47 assists
in the loss.
Following an 11-day
hiatus, the Bullets return to action and open Centennial Conference play on Wednesday,
Sept. 21 at McDaniel. Match time is 7 p.m.
