Box Score
GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Steph Smith (Hanover, PA/Cooperstown Central [NY]) and Steph Heath (Scotch Plains, NJ/Scotch Plains-Fanwood) scored in a seven-minute span of the second half to lift Gettysburg over Lebanon Valley 2-0 in non-conference women's soccer action on Wednesday.
The midfield duo also posted half of the Bullets' 16 shots on the night, helping Gettysburg (1-3-1) notch its first victory of the 2005 campaign. Katie Ferraro (Westminster, CO/St. Mary's Acad.) added an assist, giving her three points in the last two games.
Ashley Wells took the lone shot for the Flying Dutchmen (0-4) while Jess Conrad recorded five saves.
After a number of near-misses in the first half – including Casey Norman's (Underhill, VT/Mt. Mansfield Union) shot off the crossbar in the 36th minute – the Bullets scored their first two goals at Clark Field this season in rapid succession.
Freshman Christine Heerwagen (Sudbury, MA/Lincoln-Sudbury Reg.) set up the first goal with a corner kick serve into the box that deflected to Smith at point-blank range. Smith's shot was true from 15 yards out to make it 1-0 at 56:35.
Still riding the momentum from Smith's goal, Gettysburg made it 2-0 exactly seven minutes later when Conrad made a diving save on Ferraro and Heath knocked in the rebound.
Smith and Heath finished with four shots apiece on the night. Kristin Short (Massapequa, NY/St. Anthony's) needed only one save to record her second shutout of the year.
The Bullets return to action on Saturday, opening Centennial Conference play at Ursinus. Game time is 2 p.m.
