Latta sets assist record as Gettysburg rolls past Eastern Mennonite on opening day

GETTYSBURG, Pa. - Becky Latta (West Chester, PA/Henderson) set a single-game program record with four assists and Meg Goddu (Chadds Ford, PA/Unionville) scored three goals to lead Gettysburg over Eastern Mennonite 9-1 in non-conference field hockey action on Friday.

Latta surpassed three other Bullets who had recorded three assists in a game - including Goddu in 2002 - when Laura Fronduti (Media, PA/Penncrest) one-timed her pass into the cage with 6:13 remaining in the game. Bridget Seidel (Mohnton, PA/Governor Mifflin) and Krissy Browning (Baldwin, MD/Fallston) added two goals apiece, part of Gettysburg's largest goal-scoring barrage on an opening day since the 1960 squad started with a 12-0 victory over Western Maryland.

Jonalyn Dellinger notched the lone goal for the Lady Royals (0-1) while Christina Bender made eight saves.

A year after leading the Bullets (1-0) with nine assists, Latta reached nearly half of that total in a single afternoon.

After an exchange of goals in the first eight minutes, Latta set up Browning's go-ahead goal with 17:22 left in the first half, finding the sophomore all alone on the left doorstep. Goddu made it 3-1 with a second-chance goal 2 minutes, 6 seconds later, then completed her hat trick off Latta's second assist to open Gettysburg's six-goal second half.

Latta's third assist came on a re-directed shot by Seidel that made it 6-1 with 13:01 remaining. Fronduti's goal on the record-breaking assist came in similar fashion, pushing the margin to 8-1.

Freshman Savannah Ruth (New Oxford, PA/New Oxford) closed out the scoring with her first collegiate goal.

Browning's goals were the first two of her collegiate career. Seidel, Maura Downey (Lancaster, PA/Lancaster Catholic) and Lauren Eby (Denver, PA/Garden Spot) added assists in the win.

Gettysburg outshot Eastern Mennonite 25-4 for the game and held a 16-3 edge in penalty corners.

The Bullets return to action on Sunday at home against Juniata. Game time is 1 p.m.
