GETTYSBURG,
Pa. – Andy Carmer (Parkton, MD/Dulaney), Frank Hoban (Dunmore,
PA/Dunmore) and Eric Dunklee (Barton, VT/St. Johnsbury Acad.)
finished second, third and fourth overall, respectively, to help the Gettysburg
men’s cross country team defeat Juniata 26-29 in the season-opening race for both
teams on Friday. On the women’s
side, Nancy Hayes and Katey Glunt finished 1-2 to
lead the Eagles past the Bullets, 23-32. Barb Creveling (Easton, PA/Easton)
was Gettysburg’s top finisher with a third-place showing. Both races were five
kilometers.
Juniata’s Chris
Sheaffer won the men’s race with a time of 16:53, 10 seconds ahead of
Carmer’s team-best time of 17:03. Hoban concluded his first collegiate face three
seconds later and Dunklee came home in 17:11 to give the Bullets an advantage.
The Eagles placed fifth, sixth and seventh, but Mark
Ulbrich (Durham, CT/Westminster School) and freshman Jeremy Laverdiere
(West Springfield, MA/West Springfield) were the next two runners across
the line, clinching the Gettysburg win.
In
the women’s race, Creveling posted a time of 21:22 and Anna Markowitz (Macungie,
PA/Allentown Central Catholic) finished fourth overall in 21:29. The freshman
trio of Rachel Guthridge (Schwenksville, PA/The Hill School), Becca
Zabel (Frederick, MD/Urbana) and Carolyn Goodwin (Manchester, NH/Derryfield
School) closed out the Bullet scoring, placing seventh, eighth and 10th,
respectively.
Gettysburg returns
to action on Sept. 10 at the Towson Open. The women’s race is at 10 a.m., followed
