NEW YORK – Shannan Smith (Milmont Park, PA/Ridley) became the third player in Gettysburg history to record 3,000 career assists and head coach Alexa Keckler notched her first collegiate victory as the Bullets split a pair of matches on the first day of the NYU Labor Day Invitational on Friday.
Gettysburg (1-1) fell to Ithaca 3-0 in its season opener, but rebounded with a 3-1 victory over Galluadet to remain in contention for the top spot in its pool and a berth in the tournament championship match. The Bullets would reach the finals with a win over 16th-ranked Wisconsin-Platteville and a Gallaudet victory over Ithaca on Saturday.
Despite a 17-30, 28-30, 27-30 defeat to Ithaca in the opener, Smith put up 23 assists to join Nicole Evans (4,580 from 1997-2000) and Lauren Boyd (3,749 from 1999-2002) in the program's 3,000-assist club.
Against Gallaudet, Katie Heffner (Easton, PA/Easton) led three players in double figures with 16 kills and Steph Vial (Hanover, PA/Delone Catholic) recorded a team-high 19 digs as the Bullets bounced back from a 23-30 game-one set-back to give Keckler her first win at Gettysburg.
Erica Rau (Oakland Park, FL/Pine Crest) and Hillary Prutzman (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) also keyed the win with 13 and 11 kills, respectively. Smith added 36 assists in the nightcap.
The Bullets wrap up pool play on Saturday against Wisconsin-Platteville. Match time is 12 p.m. Gettysburg is slated to play its final match of the tournament at either 2 p.m. or 4 p.m.
