GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Brandon Bell (Hagerstown,
MD/North Hagerstown) scored twice in a five-minute span of the first half
to lead Gettysburg over Penn State-Berks 3-0 in non-conference men’s soccer action
on Tuesday. Freshman Chris
Bayon (Langhorne, PA/Lawrenceville School [NJ]) netted a goal for the
third straight game as the Bullets (4-2-1) outshot the Lions 31-3 en route to
their third consecutive win. Jesse Gemberling-Johnson (Wyndmoor, PA/Christopher
Dock) led the barrage with nine shots and reached the scoring column with
an assist on Bayon’s game-closing goal.
Ryan
Miller, Robert Suah and Mastapha Kanneh recorded
shots for PSU-Berks (1-5-1) while goalie Matthew DeMello finished
with 10 saves.
Minutes after
stepping off the Gettysburg bench midway through the first half, Bell put his
team ahead to stay. Ian Forster (Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks West)
sent a pass from right-to-left across the box and Bell struck a shot into the
bottom right corner to make it 1-0 in the 25th minute.
Fewer than five minutes later, Bell used a solo move to
get free at the top of the box, then ricocheted a shot off the inside of the right
post and across the line for a two-goal lead.
The
Bullets unleashed 14 shots after halftime, but didn’t score again until Bayon
re-directed a cross from Gemberling-Johnson with 3:29 remaining, the freshman’s
fourth goal in the past three games.
Matt
Langston (Harrisburg, PA/Central Dauphin East) and Adam Finkel (Potomac,
MD/Winston Churchill) split Gettysburg’s goalkeeping chores with Finkel
recording his first two collegiate saves after the break.
Bayon took seven shots on the night while Forster and Bell
added four apiece.
The Bullets
return to action on Saturday at Swarthmore. Game time is 5 p.m.
