GRANTHAM, Pa. – Kelly Thomas scored the game's only goal in the eighth minute to help top-ranked Messiah defeat Gettysburg 1-0 in non-conference women's soccer action on Wednesday.
Playing for the first time since ascending to the No. 1 ranking in Division III, the Falcons (5-0) outshot the Bullets 9-3 to extend their unbeaten streak in the series to seven games (6-0-1). Cassie Grose made one save to record her fourth shutout of the season.
Steph Heath (Scotch Plains, NJ/Scotch Plains-Fanwood), Colleen Stuart (Centennial, CO/Arapahoe) and Shaina Wright (Gettysburg, PA/Gettysburg) recorded shots for Gettysburg (1-5-1), which was facing its fourth ranked opponent in 2005. Kristin Short (Massapequa, NY/St. Anthony's) made two savess in the loss.
With one early rush, Messiah found the only scoring it would need. Annie Futato took a cross and flicked a pass to Thomas, who headed the ball high into the net for a 1-0 lead. The goal was Thomas' third of the year.
Heath provided the Bullets' best opportunity of the second half, but the visitors were unable to find the equalizer down the stretch.
Gettysburg returns to action on Saturday at Swarthmore. Game time is 7 p.m.
