GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Sarah Latta (West
Chester, PA/Henderson) scored with 11:38 remaining in the second overtime
to lift Gettysburg over Swarthmore 3-2 in both teams' Centennial Conference (CC)
opener on Saturday. Latta gathered a deflected
shot from the top of the Swarthmore arc on a Gettysburg penalty corner and netted
the game-winner.
The Bullets (5-3, 1-0 CC) found themselves
trailing the Garnet twice on the afternoon. Swarthmore struck 15 minutes into
regulation when Summer Spicer scored off an assist from Jessica
Larson on a penalty corner situation.
With
52 seconds remaining in the first half Krissy Browning (Baldwin, MD/Fallston)
tied the score off an assist from Maura Downey (Lancaster, PA/Lancaster
Catholic).
Swarthmore took the lead in the
second half on a goal from Charlotte MacAusland assisted by Julie
Monaghan. Again, the Garnet scored on a penalty corner opportunity.
Four minutes later, Downey evened the score. Bridget
Seidel (Mohnton, PA/Governor Mifflin) drove down the right wing and crossed
a ball towards the cage. Downey took the ball off a Garnet defender’s stick and
found herself one-on-one with the goalie, scoring with a shot to the left side
to set up overtime.
The Bullets held a 32-4 edge in
shots and a 21-4 edge in penalty corners. Garnet goalie Karen Lorang
amassed 16 saves in the outing.
Gettysburg returns
to action on Wednesday against Johns Hopkins. Game time is 4:30 p.m.
