GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Katie Heffner (Easton, PA/Easton) hit .341 with a team-high 18 kills to lead Gettysburg over Johns Hopkins 3-0 in Centennial Conference (CC) volleyball action on Tuesday.
Heffner added 10 digs and five total blocks as the Bullets (8-7, 1-1 CC) got in the CC's win column with their seven straight victory over the Blue Jays (14-5, 0-1 CC). Lauren Thul (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) also posted a double-double with 16 kills and 14 digs.
Shannan Smith (Milmont Park, PA/Ridley) put up a team-high 43 assists and added 15 digs on the night.
Gettysburg used decisive runs in all three games to bounce back from a 3-2 loss at McDaniel in last week's CC opener.
In game one, a 7-0 Johns Hopkins run erased the Bullets' early 14-8 lead, but the hosts responded with seven straight points of their own, part of a 16-5 run that closed the game.
Erica Rau (Oakland Park, FL/Pine Crest) served six points during the run, getting kills from Jayme Massey (Springfield, PA/Merion Mercy Acad.) and Heffner to open a 21-15 lead. Hillary Prutzman (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) recorded three of her team-high six total blocks to close out a 30-20 game-one victory.
In the second game, Gettysburg watched the Blue Jays dig out of an 8-1 hole and take a 14-13 lead before going back on top with a late run. Down 21-17, the Bullets used a 6-1 burst keyed by two kills and an ace from Thul to take a 23-22 lead.
A kill by Heffner to the far left corner of the JHU zone put Gettysburg ahead to stay at 25-24. Rau tallied two kills, one block and one ace during the Bullets' 10-5 game-closing run, finished by Thul's kill for a 30-27 decision.
The Blue Jays jumped to a 14-8 lead of their own in game three, but Rau contributed two kills and two blocks to an 8-0 Gettysburg run. The Bullets never trailed after a Heffner kill made it 20-19, taking the lead for good with a kill by Massey that put her squad ahead, 21-20.
Johns Hopkins crept within 25-24, but back-to-back kills from Thul and Heffner's final two kills of the night sealed a 30-25 game-three win and the match.
Rau finished with seven kills and three service aces. Gettysburg hit .284 as a team, knocking down 53 kills on the night.
The Bullets return to action on Thursday at Ursinus. Match time is 7 p.m.
