GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Steph Smith (Hanover, PA/Cooperstown Central [NY]) scored Gettysburg's first and third goals of the game to lead the Bulltes over Elizabethtwon 3-2 in non-conference action on Wednesday afternoon.
Katie Myers (Randallstown, MD/WSTES) ran down a ball sent to the right corner flag and sent a cross that Kelly Burke (Greenwood Village, CO/St. Mary's Academy) shot towards the cage. Elizabethtown goalie Dawn Mellen made a diving save, but Smith was there on the back side to net the Bullets' first goal on the rebound.
The Blue Jays retaliated quickly, as a touch off an Elizabethtown throw-in sent the ball into the Gettysburg defensive end. Jenna Russo ran down the ball for the Blue Jays and scored from the left side, burying a shot into the right side of the goal.
In the second half, Laurie Goon (Baltimore, MD/Loch Raven) took back the Bullet lead. Goon's goal came off another rebound in front of the net.
Smith tallied the eventual game-winner in the 58th minute when she recovered a ball the Blue Jays cleared from the box and struck a shot from 20 yards out that soared over the head of the Elizabethtown goalie.
The Blue Jays narrowed the margin to one when Gretchen Geiger headed home a loose ball in front of the cage after a corner kick.
Gettysburg had a 12-8 margin in shots. Both teams had three corner kick opportunities, and each team recorded three saves.
Gettysburg returns to action on Friday at home against Bryn Mawr. Game time is 7 p.m.
