Gettysburg battles to scoreless tie with Johns Hopkins

Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Nick Wells-Bundtzen (Williamstown, MA/Mt. Greylock) recorded eight saves and Gettysburg overcame a 24-5 shot disadvantage to tie Johns Hopkins 0-0 in Centennial Conference (CC) men’s soccer action on Wednesday.

Jesse Gemberling-Johnson (Wyndmoor, PA/Christopher Dock) took a team-high three shots for the Bullets, who snapped a three-game losing streak to the Blue Jays (5-1-3, 0-1-2 CC) while extending JHU’s tie-laden winless streak to four games (0-1-3).

Steve Read led Johns Hopkins with four shots while Nicholas Guana, Doug Pollack and Ethan Mulligan fired three shots apiece. The Blue Jays held a 14-2 edge in corner kicks for the game, but were unable to find their first conference win of 2005.

Johns Hopkins recorded the first four shots of the game, but Gettysburg’s Garrett Bruno (Harrisburg, PA/Susquehanna Twp.) got the best look of the first half, one-timing a left-footed drive that forced Dan Coble to make a point-blank save in the 33rd minute.

The Blue Jays stepped up the pressure with three corners and two shots in the final five minutes of the half, but another Bullet counterattack resulted in a Brandon Bell (Hagerstown, MD/N. Hagerstown) shot deflecting just wide of the left post.

Johns Hopkins took 11 of the game’s 12 second-half shots, but Wells-Bundtzen was up to the challenge, making two saves on Matthew Carlson and single stops against Read and Traver Davis.

Coble’s second and final save of the night came on Gemberling-Johnson’s header in the 73rd minute, set up by a strong half-field run by Mike Tirney (Springfield, PA/Springfield).

Gettysburg (4-3-2, 1-1-1 CC) survived JHU three shots in the final 11 minutes to reach the overtime. In the first 20 seconds of extra time, Gemberling-Johnson lasered a shot wide left, then struck another shot wide minutes later.

Manbaj Gill, who beat the Bullets with a goal in last year’s meeting, nearly repeated the feat in the final seconds of the first overtime, sailing a free kick just high over the crossbar. The Blue Jays took the only four shots of the second overtime, but Wells-Bundtzen’s final two saves sealed the tie.

Gettysburg returns to action on Saturday at home against Ursinus. Game time is 2 p.m.
