Gettysburg ties Mary Washington 1-1 in season opener

Box Score

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – In the second of two games held at Mary Washington on Saturday, Gettysburg battled the host Eagles to a 1-1 draw in its season opener.

After a flurry of scoring early in the contest, neither the Bullet nor the UMW defenses would allow another point for the remainder of the game.

Brad Tabor (Kinnelon, NJ/Kinnelon), Gettysburg’s top returning scorer from 2004, got on the board first at 7:56. Tabor’s goal came on a cross from the right side by Jesse Gemberling-Johnson (Wyndmoor, PA/Christopher Dock). With the assist, Gemberling-Johnson, a sophomore transfer from Eastern, collected a point in his debut as a Bullet.

The Eagles answered quickly. Tommy Park scored unassisted on a free kick at 12:21 to level the score at one.

In the goal for the Bullets, senior co-captain Nick Wells-Bundtzen (Williamstown, MA/Mt. Greylock) collected eight saves on the day, five of them coming in the first half.

In the first overtime stanza, Gettysburg midfielder Garrett Bruno (Harrisburg, PA/Susquehanna Township) shot 18 seconds into the period. The Bullets managed to get off one more shot in the first overtime period, from Gemberling-Johnson at 93:19.  Mary Washington goalie Elliot Jones saved both shots, finishing the day with six saves.

Cameron Bonfield (Princeton NJ/Hun School) had a shot deflected out of bounds for a Gettysburg corner in the second overtime period. The Bullets had three corner kicks in the final overtime period, but were unable to get a shot on net.

Gettysburg returns to action on Sunday against Marymount in Fredericksburg, Va. Game time is 1 p.m.
