FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – In the second of two
games held at Mary Washington on Saturday, Gettysburg battled the host Eagles
to a 1-1 draw in its season opener. After
a flurry of scoring early in the contest, neither the Bullet nor the UMW defenses
would allow another point for the remainder of the game.
Brad Tabor (Kinnelon, NJ/Kinnelon), Gettysburg’s
top returning scorer from 2004, got on the board first at 7:56. Tabor’s goal came
on a cross from the right side by Jesse Gemberling-Johnson (Wyndmoor, PA/Christopher
Dock). With the assist, Gemberling-Johnson, a sophomore transfer from
Eastern, collected a point in his debut as a Bullet.
The Eagles answered quickly. Tommy Park scored
unassisted on a free kick at 12:21 to level the score at one.
In the goal for the Bullets, senior co-captain Nick Wells-Bundtzen
(Williamstown, MA/Mt. Greylock) collected eight saves on the day, five
of them coming in the first half.
In
the first overtime stanza, Gettysburg midfielder Garrett Bruno (Harrisburg,
PA/Susquehanna Township) shot 18 seconds into the period. The Bullets
managed to get off one more shot in the first overtime period, from Gemberling-Johnson
at 93:19. Mary Washington goalie Elliot Jones saved both shots,
finishing the day with six saves.
Cameron
Bonfield (Princeton NJ/Hun School) had a shot deflected out of bounds
for a Gettysburg corner in the second overtime period. The Bullets had three corner
kicks in the final overtime period, but were unable to get a shot on net.
Gettysburg returns to action on Sunday against Marymount in Fredericksburg,
Va. Game time is 1 p.m.
