GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Krissy Browning
(Baldwin, MD/Fallston) and Meg Goddu (Chadds Ford, PA/Unionville)
scored two goals apiece to lead Gettysburg over Juniata 6-0 in non-conference
field hockey action on Sunday. Lauren
Eby (Denver, PA/Garden Spot) and Amy Schneider (Allentown, PA/ Moravian
Academy) collected one goal each to round out the scoring. With the win,
Gettysburg has scored 15 goals in its first two games of the season.
The Bullets collected three of their six goals on penalty corner
situations. Eby scored first for Gettysburg, striking an unassisted shot from
the top of the circle on a penalty corner.
On
the second Bullet goal, Maura Downey (Lancaster, PA/Lancaster Catholic)
started a breakaway down the left side by beating her defender and passing to
Browning. She drove hard to the goal and crossed the ball in front of the
cage. Schneider was on the backside of the net to finish the cross.
The Gettysburg defense limited Juniata to a lone shot in the
first half. Kim Wagner took a solo run down the right side and fired
a shot that missed the cage just left. Bullet goalie Katherine Corkhill
(Paoli, PA/Academy of Notre Dame) made two saves in the second half to
record her first shutout of the season.
Browning
scored back-to-back goals to end the first half and begin the second half. With
9:34 remaining in the first, she put a stick on a cross from Downey in heavy traffic
to put Gettysburg up 3-0, carrying them into the half.
To open the second half, Goddu beat her defender to force a one-on-one
with the goalie. Her shot clanged off the pipe, but Browning was there to
drive the ricochet home and put the Bullets up by four.
Goddu capitalized on her remaining opportunities, scoring the
last two goals of the game. Becky Latta (West Chester, PA/Henderson)
settled a hit from a penalty corner and made one pass to Goddu, who struck a long
shot from the top of the circle into the net.
To
close out the scoring, Goddu deflected a hard shot from Bridget Seidel (Mohnton,
PA/Governor Mifflin), sending it airborne. The ball sailed over the head
of Juniata goalie Andrea Way and scored with 9:49 left in the game.
Way finished the game with six saves.
The
Bullets held a 9-4 advantage in penalty corners over the visiting Eagles and outshot
them, 16-4.
Gettysburg returns to
action on Thursday at home against Richard Stockton. Game time is 4:30 p.m.
