Frostburg State strikes late to defeat Gettysburg, 2-0

Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Gregg Laskow scored off a turnover in the 86th minute to help Frostburg State defeat Gettysburg 2-0 in non-conference men’s soccer action on Wednesday.

Trevor Havey added his second goal of the season 68 seconds later as the Bobcats (1-2) snapped a four-game losing streak to the Bullets (1-1-1). Derek Richardson recorded four saves to earn the shutout.

Matt Varner (Medford, NJ/Shawnee) fired a team-best three of Gettysburg’s 12 shots, putting one on goal. Garrett Bruno (Harrisburg, PA/Susquehanna Twp.) and Jesse Gemberling-Johnson (Wyndmoor, PA/Christopher Dock) added two shots apiece.

Minutes after surviving a pair of Bullet shots that ripped off the goal post, Frostburg State struck for the winning tally.

A Bullet turnover put the ball on the foot of Laskow at the 18-yard line and the sophomore lofted a shot over Gettysburg goalie Nick Wells-Bundtzen (Williamstown, MA/Mt. Greylock) to make it 1-0 with 4:08 remaining.

Still carrying the momentum of Laskow’s goal, the Bobcats struck again when Havey strolled down the left side, beat a defender and placed a shot in the lower right corner for a two-goal cushion with 3:02 left.

The Bullets got the better of play in the early going, firing half of their shots before the game was 15 minutes old. Richardson got into the contest with saves on Varner in the 11th minute and Bruno in the 15th minute. The Frostburg keeper also stopped Brandon Bell (Hagerstown, MD/North Hagerstown) with 2:29 left in the first half.

Wells-Bundtzen returned the favor with three saves in the first 23 minutes of the second half. Gettysburg’s best chance to score came in the 76th minute when Bruno hit the post to the left of Richardson and Brad Tabor’s (Kinnelon, NJ/Kinnelon) rebound followed suit.

Wells-Bundtzen saved a free kick by Eric Whisman, but Laskow and Havey found the net moments later to give the Bobcats their first win of the 2005 campaign.

The Bullets return to action on Friday against Eastern at Christopher Dock High School in Lansdale, Pa. Game time is 7 p.m.
