GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Mike Spadafora (Richoboro, PA/Archbishop Wood) scored a game-high 15 points, including a ten-point second half, to lead Gettysburg over Washington College (Md.), 75-60, in Centennial Conference (CC) action on Tuesday night.
Brian Sateja (Morristown, NJ/Delbarton School) put the Bullets on the board first on a jumper one minute and ten seconds into play, and the Bullets never looked back as they picked up their second conference win without ever trailing in the contest.
In a matchup of the CC's most prolific scoring offense and its second stingiest defense, the Gettysburg defense prevailed early, keeping the Shoremen off the scoreboard for the first four minutes and seven seconds before Dustin Abbate hit a three pointer.
A free throw from Jonathan Webb and a layup from Joey Breslin brought Washington back to within four, 10-6, with the clock at 13:12.
However, Erik Fromm (Swedesboro, NJ/Kingsway Regional), the CC's leader in three point shooting percentage, hit a trey for the Bullets just 14 seconds after Breslin's layup, putting the Bullets back up by seven. Again, the Bullet defense put the clamps on the Shoremen offense, this time holding them scoreless for a stretch of 4:40 seconds.
Gettysburg built their advantage to 20-6 before Washington would score again with eight minutes and 23 seconds left in the first stanza.
Late in the half, two free throws by Abbate and a layup from Scott Polyniak helped the Shoremen claw back to within seven with 36 seconds to play, but Chris Nevolo (Neshanic Station, NJ/Somerville) hit a jumper to put the Bullets back up by nine going into the intermission.
The two teams traded baskets to open the second half. Washington closed the lead to 8 with 18 minutes and 20 seconds remaining, but a Dan Capkin (Wynnewood, PA/Lower Merion) layup near the 16 minute mark gave Gettysburg a ten-point lead at 40-30. The Bullets would not relinquish their double-digit advantage the rest of the way.
Spadafora tied with Fromm for a game-high five assists to go along with his game-high 15 points. Fromm's five assists were a career high. He also had a team-high four rebounds and collected double-digit points, finishing with 11. Sateja put up a season-high ten points and Capkin collected a career-high nine points. Joe Spierenburg (Chambersburg, PA/St. Maria Goretti [MD]) blocked a game high three shots.
The Bullets shot 55 percent from the field in the contest.
For Washington, Breslin collected a team-high 13 points. Webb led the Shoremen with seven rebounds.
