Bengel becomes Gettysburgs all-time leading scorer in 71-53 win over Swarthmore Game Recap

Box Score

Gettysburg, Pa. – Jennifer Bengel (Timonium, MD/Roland Park Country Day School) scored 23 points and became Gettysburg's all-time leading scorer in a 68-60 win over Swarthmore in Centennial Conference (CC) action on Thursday.

Bengel took a pass from Katie Eiden (Silver Spring, MD/Georgetown Visitation) in the post with 16:48 remaining in the first half. She spun to the baseline and banked the ball in the basket for her third and fourth points of the game. With that shot, she became Gettysburg's all-time leading scorer, passing the record of 1,462 points previously held by Ann Hymes '96.

Bengel scored 11 points in the first half and Jamie Marshall (Pottsville, PA/Nativity B.V.M.) chipped in 10 points to help the Bullets build a 40-27 halftime lead.

Gettysburg (9-6, 6-2 CC) opened the second half with a 12-4 run with the help of 3-pointers by Marshall and Margaret White (Burke, VA/James W. Robinson), pushing the Bullets' lead to 52-31 with 13:46 remaining. Gettysburg led by at least 15 points for the remainder of the game.

Gettysburg outrebounded Swarthmore (5-7, 2-5 CC) by a margin of 53-36. Amy Tarbell (Westminster, MD/East Greenwich [RI]) pulled down a career-high 14 rebounds while Bengel and Kathryn Reilly (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) each grabbed eight boards.

Eiden and Marshall each finished the game with 13 points while White ended with 11.

Karen Berk led Swarthmore with 13 points and Cara Tigue grabbed 12 rebounds in the loss.

Bengel is etching her place in the Bullets' record books as one of the best to put on a Gettysburg uniform. In addition to the scoring record she set tonight, Bengel set the Bullets' career record for made free throws earlier this season. She also has a chance to break the Gettysburg all-time rebounding record before her career is over. Bengel needs 80 rebounds to break the career record set by Megan Malloy '99 (912).  Bengel can become the second Bullet to hold both the career scoring and rebounding records. Ann Hymes '96 held both records from 1996-1999.

During her career, Bengel has demonstrated that she is one of the region's best forwards.  She is a three-time All-Centennial Conference (CC) performer, including her first team selections in both the 2003-04 and 2004-05 seasons.  She currently leads the CC scoring (19.3 ppg) and is third in rebounding (8.9 rpg).

The Bullets return to action on Saturday at Haverford. Game time is 4 p.m.
