Gettysburg deals Dickinson first CC loss, 48-45, in OT

Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. –  Kathryn Reilly (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) and Jennifer Bengel (Timonium, MD/Roland Park Country School) combined for 31 of Gettysburg's 48 points as the Bullets handed the Red Devils their first Centennial Conference (CC) loss of the season, 48-45, in overtime on Wednesday night.

Reilly's 16 points were a game-high, and Bengel added 15 to go along with a team-high 11 rebounds. For Bengel, her first basket of the night, a layup at the 13:55 mark of the first half, made her the first Gettysburg College women's basketball player to record 1,500 career points.

In a game that Gettysburg led by as many as 14 in the second half, the Red Devils battled back down the stretch and managed to tie the game on two made free throws from Julie Younes with 55 ticks left in regulation. Neither team managed to score in the closing seconds, and the game went into overtime.

Dickinson took its first lead of the game 57 seconds into overtime on a layup by Carly Onkotz.

Megan Hartman (Lewistown, PA/Indian Valley) drove to the basket and was fouled with three minutes and 15 seconds left. Hartman made both of her free throws to tie the game back up.

On the ensuing possession, Ally Teatom buried a jumper to reclaim a two-point Red Devil lead.

Just 12 seconds later, freshman Margaret White (Burke, VA/James W. Robinson) nailed a three-pointer, giving the Bullets their first overtime lead, 40-39.

The game was scoreless for the next minute before a Reilly jumper with one minute and 44 seconds remaining put Gettysburg up by three.

Onkotz scored for Dickinson on the next possession to narrow the gap back to one, and the Red Devils immediately pressured on the Bullet's inbound, forcing a loose ball. Dickinson's Jess Howard was fouled pursuing the ball, and she made one of her two attempts from the charity stripe, knotting the game at 42.

Dickinson managed to steal the ball back again, but missed a jumper and a three pointer on the other end before Bengel was fouled on the second rebound of the possession with only 29 seconds remaining. Bengel made both of her free throw opportunities good, putting Gettysburg up 42-44.

After missing her first four three point attempts of the game, Laura Houseal made good on her fifth with just 18 seconds left in the game, putting Dickinson back up on top by one in dramatic fashion.

After a Gettysburg timeout with 15 seconds left to play, the Bullets inbounded to Hartman, who wasted no time pushing the ball up court. The point guard went coast-to-coast to score on twisting half-shot, half layup in just six seconds, taking back a one-point Gettysburg advantage.

Dickinson turned the ball over trying to hurry the ball downcourt and had to foul Katie Eiden (Silver Spring, MD/Georgetown Visitation [DC]). Eiden hit both of her clutch free throws to give Gettysburg a three point lead.

The Red Devils took a time out after Eiden's foul shots and managed to draw up a play for Houseal to attempt another heroic three-pointer, but her shot careened off the back of the iron as the buzzer sounded.

After Gettysburg limited Dickinson to just eight first-half points, the Red Devils held the Bullets to just seventeen in the second half to force the thrilling overtime period.

For Dickinson, Teatom led the team with ten points. Three Red Devils recorded double-digit assist numbers, Teatom (14), Houseal (13) and Younes (12).

Hartman dished out a game-high five assists for Gettysburg.

Gettysburg returns to action against McDaniel on Saturday. Game time is 2 p.m.
