GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Katy Powell hit the game-winning layup with 27 seconds remaining to push McDaniel past Gettysburg 67-64 in Centennial Conference (CC) action on Saturday.
Megan Hartman (Lewistown, PA/Indian Valley) stole the ball from Powell and drove the length of the floor to tie the game 64-64 with 47 seconds remaining. On the ensuing possession, Powell drove through the Gettysburg defense and banked in the game-winner.
The Bullets had a chance to tie the game, but the hook shot by Jennifer Bengel (Timonium, MD/Roland Park Country Day School) hit the front of the iron with 6 seconds remaining. Kristy Costa was fouled on the rebound and she made 1-of-2 foul shots to ice the game.
Hartman's desperation 3-pointer from 40 feet at the buzzer hit the back of the iron and McDaniel escaped with the 67-64 victory.
With the win, McDaniel (12-4, 7-3) broke the Bullets' (11-7, 8-3 CC) five-game winning-streak.
Bengel led all-scores with 21 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as she recorded her third consecutive double-double and 10th of the season. She also dished out six assists which ties her career high. Hartman scored a career-high 17 points and added 7 boards in the loss.
Gettysburg opened the game on a 12-4 run capped by a 3-pointer from Jamie Marshall (Pottsville, PA/Nativity B.V.M.) with 12:56 to go in the half. The eight point lead would be the Bullets largest of the game.
The Green Terror would quickly take the lead 14-12 with the help of 3-pointers by Robbin Gregg and Allison Biggs.
Kathryn Reilly (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) went hard to the basket. Her shot went in and she was fouled. She made her free throw to put Gettysburg back in the lead 15-14 with 9:14 left in the half. The Bullets would not trail the rest of the half and went to the locker room with a 28-28 lead.
The Green Terror regained the lead, 33-32, with 16:51 to go as Costa made two free throws. She proceeded to score three more of her 17 second-half points to give McDaniel a four-point lead.
McDaniel would extend their lead to 57-50 with 6:22 to go before the Bullets went on a 14-5 run to cut the lead to 64-62 on a Hartman free throw. She scored six points during the run before she tied the game with 47 seconds remaining.
Costa finished the afternoon with a game-high 21 points and Powell added 19 points in the win.
Reilly scored 13 points for the Bullets and also blocked five shots.
The Bullets return to action on Saturday at Muhlenberg. Game time is 2 p.m.
