GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Todd Brady (Hancock, NH/ConVal) led all scorers with 14 points as Gettysburg knocked off Johns Hopkins, 58-41 in Centennial Conference (CC) action on Wednesday night.
The Bullets limited the conference's highest-scoring team to its lowest offensive output of the season. With the key CC win, Gettysburg overtakes sole possession of fourth place in the conference.
Trailing by seven points after a Chris Morley layup for the Blue Jays with 10 minutes and 13 seconds left to play in the first half, an Erik Fromm (Swedesboro, NJ/Kingsway Regional) layup sparked the Bullets to a 22-point offensive burst while the Gettsburg defense held Johns Hopkins to eight points to close out the final ten minutes of the first period.
Down by four with more than seven minutes to play, Mike Spadafora (Richboro, PA/Archbishop Wood) hit a three to bring Gettysburg to within one.
On the ensuing defensive stand a Kyle McGlensey (West Chester, PA/West Chester East) steal led to a Matt Whelan (Ridgefield, CT/Ridgefield) layup, and the Bullets' first lead since the third minute of play.
The Blue Jays managed to claw back to within two in the last minute of the half on a three-point play by Danny Narwocki, who was fouled on a layup and converted on his free throw.
Whelan answered back with a layup for the Bullets on their ensuing offensive possession.
Spadafora made a steal on the Bullets' consequent defensive stand, and capitalized the Gettysburg turnaround by burying a deep three pointer as the buzzer sounded to put the Bullets up by seven going into the intermission.
In the second stanza, the Blue Jays closed the game to within four on another layup from Nawrocki with 16 minutes and 38 seconds left to play.
A minute and a half later, Brady was fouled making a layup and hit his extra stroke from the charity stripe to put the Bullets back up by seven. The Bullets would not look back as they built a double-digit lead and protected it down the stretch.
The Blue Jays were unable to overcome 23 turnovers in the contest as the Gettysburg defense picked up 12 steals on the night.
Behind Brady's game-high 14, Whelan finished with 13, Fromm with 12, and Spadafora with 10 to complete the quartet of Bullets scoring in double-digits. Spadafora tied a career-high with five steals while Julius Redd (Gaithersburg, MD/Magruder) and McGlensey each had three. Redd accounted for half of the Bullets' six blocks.
