Whelan, Spadafora lead Gettysburg to a 58-52 win over Muhlenberg

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Matt Whelan (Ridgefield, CT/Ridgefield) and Mike Spadafora (Richboro, PA/Archbishop Wood) each finished with 15 points to lead Gettysburg past Muhlenberg 58-52 in Centennial Conference (CC) action on Saturday.
 
Gettysburg (11-8, 7-5 CC) is on a four game winning streak, while Muhlenberg (9-9, 5-7 CC) remains without a CC road win this season.

Gettysburg did not trail in the game until Muhlenberg's Chris Huber made a layup with 2:27 to go in the game, giving the Mules a 49-48 advantage.
 
On the next possession, Spadafora drilled a 3-pointer off a nice assist from Todd Brady (Hancock, NH/ConVal) to regain the Bullets' lead at 51-49 with 2:15 remaining.
 
Huber answered quickly with a 3-pointer of his own to retake the lead 52-51 with 1:45 left in the game. His 3-pointer was the only 3-point goal made by the Mules in the game.
 
With 49 seconds left to play, Erik Fromm (Swedesboro, NJ/Kingsway Regional) took a pass from Brady. He shot a baby hook over Jeff Stewart, made the basket, and Stewart fouled him on the play. Fromm made the ensuring free throw to give the Bullets a 54-52 lead.
 
Spadafora and Brady each made two foul shots in the final 21 seconds of the game to give Gettysburg the 58-52 win.
 
Gettysburg opened the game on a 17-8 run keyed by seven points from Whelan and five from Brian Sateja (Morristown, NJ/Delbarton School).
 
The Bullets would maintain their lead, but Stewart scored four points of his 13 first half points in the final minute of the frame to cut the lead to 28-23 at the half.
 
Muhlenberg opened the second half with a 5-1 run, cutting the lead to 29-28 with 17:27 remaining. Gettysburg quickly ran its lead back up to six on a 3-pointer from Spadafora and a layup by Brady and they would extend their lead to 42-33 with 12:05 to go.
 
The Mules used a 13-4 run ignited by nine points from Stewart to tie the game 46-46 before the action of the final three minutes of the game.
 
Stewart finished the game with 26 points for the Mules while Brady finished with 10 points and Spadafora tied a career-high six assists in the win.

Gettysburg used a 31-21 rebounding advantage to help them defeat Muhlenberg. Spadafora and Fromm both lead the Bullets in rebounding with five boards, while Jimmy O'Brien led the Mules with five rebounds.
 
The Bullets return to action on Wednesday at Franklin & Marshall. Game time is 8 p.m.
