Three Bullets score in double figures as Gettysburg downs Carnegie Mellon, 66-54

Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. –  Jennifer Bengel (Timonium, MD/Roland Park Country School) led all scorers with 18 points as Gettysburg defeated Carnegie Mellon 66-54 in their opening game of the 16th Annual Days Inn Tournament at Gettysburg on Tuesday.

Bengel tied with Megan Hartman (Lewistown, PA/Indian Valley) for a team-high eight rebounds.  Hartman, along with fellow guard Katie Eiden (Silver Spring, MD/Georgetown Visitation [DC]) tallied ten points to complete the trio of Bullets scoring in double figures.

Bengel's eight boards in the contest brought her career total to 801 and vaulted her over Donna Bourke (1988-92) and into fifth place among Gettysburg's career rebound leaders. Bengel now stands 31 rebounds short of tying Barb Taylor (1982-86) for fourth on the all-time list.

Gettysburg stretched their first-half lead to as many as 12 points twice, the last on two Kathryn Reilly (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) free throws with six minutes and 40 seconds left in the half to bring the score to 22-10.

The Tartans went on a tear to end the half, holding the Bullets to seven points the rest of the way and keying on three pointers from Stacie Aleski and Colleen Light to take a one point lead going into the break.

After two lead changes in the first five minutes of the second half, Gettysburg went up for good on another Reilly free throw to put the Bullets up 37-36.

Inside the next four minutes, the Bullets held Carnegie Mellon scoreless as they stretched their lead to as many as nine. Bengel, Margaret White (Burke, VA/James W. Robinson) and Eiden each scored from the field to fuel the Gettysburg streak.

Gettysburg managed to stretch its lead to as many as 17 twice in the waning minutes of the game, on a Jamie Marshall (Pottsville, PA/Nativity B.V.M.) layup with five minutes and 27 seconds left and again on a White layup with three minutes and 10 seconds to play.

The Tartans battled back to close the margin to 12 at the end of regulation.

Rabecca Shore and Light led the Tartans with nine points each and Shore and Rachelle Roll paced the team with nine boards apiece.

Gettysburg returns to action on Wednesday at home against Gwynedd-Mercy. Game time is 4 p.m.
