Volleyball Rallies From 2-1 Deficit to Take 3-2 Win Over McDaniel

Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Gettysburg rallied from a 2-1 deficit to win games four and five and take a 3-2 (30-17, 28-30, 27-30, 30-27, 15-9) decision from McDaniel in Centennial Conference action on Wednesday night at Bream Gym. Junior outside hitter Katie Heffner (Easton, Pa./Easton) posted a match-high 21 kills on .315 hitting. Freshman setter Amanda Krampf (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) dished out a career-high 54 assists for her second straight 50-assist match and added a personal-best 28 digs, and six Bullets reached double digits in digs led by 34 by senior libero Steph Vial (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic).

McDaniel (16-7, 5-2 CC) was led by junior outside hitter Katie Seibel, who had 15 kills. Sophomore Kristie Fourcade and senior Jamie Bodden split the setting duties, recording 19 and 16 assists, respectively, and Fourcade added a team-high 25digs.

The Bullets (16-8, 7-1 CC) stormed out of the gates with 14 kills and just one error on 27 swings for a team hitting percentage of .481 in the opener. The Green Terror committed an error on the opening serve, and Gettysburg added to the lead with four kills and two blocks to score six of the next eight points. Junior right side Lauren Thul (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon Central) had three kills and a pair of block assists in the sequence en route to seven kills in the first set. The Bullets continued to build the lead throughout the game and led by as many as 13 on four occasions, including at game's end when they recorded a 30-17 decision for a 1-0 lead in the match.

It looked like that dominance would continue into game two. Gettysburg posted five kills a block and an ace in the game's first 10 points to take a 7-3 lead, but control gave way to struggles. McDaniel scored the next five points on Bullet errors and went ahead 8-7. The home squad stopped the run with a kill by sophomore outside hitter Meghan McConville (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) to tie it again, but a combined block from Green Terror freshman middle hitter Sara Hanlon and junior outside hitter Virginia Dale, two Gettysburg attack errors and a kill by freshman middle hitter Taylor Herrgott stretched the lead back to four at 12-8, forcing a Bullet timeout. Gettysburg would claw back to a two-point deficit at 18-16 and then responded with three of the next four points on a McConville kill and two by senior middle hitter Caitlyn Barr (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck). McDaniel called a time out, and the teams then went back and forth for several points. The game was tied 10 times, including at 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 26 and 27 points. Gettysburg got to 27 first on an attack error by the Green Terror. McDaniel then scored four of the next five points to take a 30-28 win, closing it out on a kill by Dale.

The Bullets ran off three consecutive points to open game three, getting a kill from senior middle hitter Hillary Prutzman (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty), an attack error by McDaniel and a kill by Thul. The Green Terror scored 13 of the next 15 points, including an 8-0 run to take a commanding lead. The McDaniel advantage was extended to nine three different times, including at 23-14. The Bullets would not go away, though. Freshman outside hitter Kristina Mercier (Baltimore, Md./Mount de Sales Academy), who had not played in either of the first two games, came off the bench and knocked down three straight kills. Seibel stopped the run with a kill, but Gettysburg scored the next seven points to tie the match at 24-24 and force a timeout. Hanlon served up an ace out of the timeout, but followed with a service error. A Gettysburg attack error followed by a Heffner kill tied it again, and a McDaniel ball-handling error gave the Bullets their first lead since 3-2 at 27-26, but the Green Terror bounced back with four straight points for the win, which was sealed by a huge block by Herrgott and freshman middle hitter Lanni Reisinger.

Game four was one of the Bullets' closest of the year. It featured 12 ties and five lead changes. The game was tied at every point from one to 10 except nine, and the margin was never more than four points either way. The Green Terror went up 16-15, but the Bullets scored five of the next six points, including two Heffner kills to take the lead for good en route to a 30-27 win and evening the match at 2-2. Heffner and Mercier each had seven kills in the game.

In game five, there were six ties and four lead changes. After the game was tied at 7-7, Barr and Heffner knocked down back-to-back kills to take the lead for good. Out of a timeout, Dale recorded a kill for McDaniel, but Barr, Prutzman and freshman right side Stephanie Rickabaugh (West Chester, Pa./Liberty) all recorded kills, and Vial served up an ace. McDaniel junior Deanna Lehr got one point back with a kill to make it 13-9, but Prutzman and Rickabaugh ended it with consecutive kills.
The Bullets return to action on Saturday when they take on Ursinus in the final regular season match at Bream Gym. The Senior Day contest will begin at 1 p.m.
