York (Pa.) Defeats Women's Soccer 2-1

Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. - Erin Kuhn assisted both of York's goals in a 2-1 win over Gettysburg in non-conference women's soccer action on Wednesday evening at Clark Field.

York won its second game in as many days and improves to 13-4-1 overall. The Bullets drop to 11-5-1 on the season.

The Spartans' first shot of the game resulted in a goal. In a battle in front of the net, Kuhn found Kaitlyn Harney to the left of the goal. Harney tucked the ball into the net to give York an early 1-0 lead at 3:02.

The Spartans continued to put offensive pressure on the Bullets. In the span of five minutes, Emily Sullivan ripped three shots towards the goal. One was blocked by a Gettysburg defender, and sophomore goalkeeper Danielle St. Pierre (Londonderry, N.H./Trinity) made saves on the other two.

The Bullets had two key chances to score later in the half. Collecting the ball just inside the box, sophomore forward Erin Miller (Massapequa, N.Y./St. Anthony's) lofted a shot to the upper corner of the net. However, the ball struck the crossbar and was grabbed by goalie Amanda Lomberg at 22:39. In the 29th minute, senior forward Katie Myers (Randallstown, Md./WSTES) struck a ball that ended up bouncing off the post.

Once again, York opened the half by putting pressure on the Bullets' defense. The Spartans forced St. Pierre to make a save and then increased their advantage to 2-0. Kuhn passed the ball up the left wing to Sullivan. Sullivan dribbled past two Gettysburg defenders and shot a ball that hugged the turf. It rolled into the far bottom corner of the net for the score.

Gettysburg answered with a goal of its own less than six minutes later. Junior midfielder Shaina Wright (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) had the ball in the left corner of the box. She lofted a crossing pass to a wide open Myers streaking towards the cage. Myers punched the ball into the net to cut York's lead to 2-1.

The Bullets outshot the Spartans 6-1 in the final 29 minutes of the game, but were unable to put the ball in the goal. Senior midfielders Steph Heath (Scotch Plains, N.J./Scotch Plains-Fanwood) and Steph Smith (Cooperstown, N.Y./Cooperstown) each forced Lomberg to make her two only saves of the game during the final minutes of action.

The Bullets will return to action on Saturday at home against Dickinson for their final regular-season game of the year. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
