LANCASTER, Pa. – Junior tailback
Tom Sturges (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) has been named Centennial Conference Offensive Player of the Week for the third time this season in an announcement made by the conference on Sunday. Sturges carried the ball 32 times for 189 yards and a career-high-tying two touchdowns in Gettysburg's 17-14 loss at McDaniel on Saturday.
Junior linebacker
James Holubowich (Mineola, N.Y./Mineola) was also named to the CC weekly honor roll after collecting a career-high 15 tackles. His previous best was 10 stops, and he nearly matched that in the first half with nine.
For the fourth time in the last five weeks, the conference's outstanding offensive performer has come from Gettysburg. On Sept. 17, freshman quarterback
Matt Flynn (Northfield, N.J./Mainland Regional) was named Offensive Player of the Week after coming on in relief and tying the school record with five touchdown passes. The only week in that stretch that Gettysburg has not produced the offensive player of the week was last week when the team had an open date.
On Saturday, Sturges, who also was named Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 10 and Sept. 24, broke the 150-yard mark for the fourth consecutive game. He also caught two passes for four yards and added 53 kick return yards on a 37-yard solo effort and 16 on a lateral during the desperation kickoff return as time expired. Sturges ran 11 times for 73 yards in the fourth quarter alone to keep the Bullets alive. With the Green Terror up 7-0, he scored on a four-yard run. McDaniel scored quickly on its next possession, but Sturges returned the kickoff 37 yards and gained 50 of the 56 yards on the next drive, including a 26-yard touchdown run to tie it at 14-14. Sturges finished the day with a career-high 246 all-purpose yards.
On the season, Sturges has 737 yards rushing on 130 carries to average 5.7 yards per rush. He has scored five touchdowns and leads the Centennial Conference in rushing with 147.4 yards per game, which is nearly 70 yards per game better than the next-highest total. He is also the conference's leader in all-purpose yards with 192.6 yards per outing, having piled up 188 yards in kickoff returns and 38 yards receiving. Entering the McDaniel game, Sturges ranked eighth in the nation in rushing and ninth in all-purpose yards.
Gettysburg will return to action Saturday when the Bullets take on Johns Hopkins in a Centennial Conference game at Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m., but fans are encouraged to come early to be a part of homecoming festivities that will also help to kick off Gettysburg College's 175th anniversary celebration.
