Sophomore guard
Dan Capkin (Wynnewood, Pa./Lower Merion) led Gettysburg (1-5, 0-3 CC) with a game-high 21 points. Sophomore forward
Joe Spierenburg (Chambersburg, Pa./St. Maria Goretti [Md.]), the CC's leading shot blocker, swatted a career-high five shots and scored a career-high 14 points in the loss. The Bullets blocked 10 shots in the game, the most the team has blocked in a single game in at least six seasons.
Gettysburg jumped out to a 5-0 lead 1:58 into the game on a jumper by Spierenburg and a 3-pointer by Capkin. The Bears clawed back and tied the game at 8-8 on a layup by Furey at 13:44.
After trading baskets, Gettysburg went on an 11-2 run. A pair of 3-pointers from Capkin and senior center
Mike Beck (Clearwater, Fla./Clearwater) and a conventional three-point play by sophomore guard
Corey Dorsey (Frederick, Md./St. Johns at Prospect Hall), who skied to the basket for a layup and was fouled, keyed the run. However, Ursinus would fight to tie the game and take a two-point lead at halftime on a free throw by Remy Cousart.
After seven lead changes and two ties in the first half, the same trend continued in the second half as both teams had a hot-shooting hand. Ursinus shot 60.9 percent, and the Bullets shot 46.7 percent from the floor in the second frame that featured four more ties and six lead changes.
Senior center
Brian Sateja (Morristown, N.J./Delbarton School) tied the game at 28-28 with 18:59 remaining. Neither team would gain more than a one-possession advantage until a 3-pointer by Spierenburg gave Gettysburg a 46-42 lead. However, six consecutive points on a three-point play by Fabian, and a 3-pointer by John Noonan gave Ursinus a 48-46 lead it would not relinquish.
Two baskets by Shattuck helped increase the Bears' lead to 57-49 with 4:04 remaining. Gettysburg fought hard to pull out a win. A 3-pointer by junior guard
Matt Presby (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) and a jumper by Beck brought Gettysburg within three, 57-54, at 1:35. A pair of layups by Shattuck and Furey drove the lead to 61-54 with 46 seconds left on the clock, but Gettysburg did not give up.
In transition, senior forward
Julius Redd (Gaithersburg, Md./Magruder) slammed home an emphatic dunk, and Capkin drilled his fifth 3-pointer of the game to cut the lead to 62-59. However, three foul shots iced the game for Ursinus who ended with a 65-60 victory.
Gettysburg forced 27 turnovers in the game.
The Bullets will return to action on Saturday at home against McDaniel. The opening tip is set for 2 p.m.
