Gettysburg uses big second half to defeat Swarthmore, 67-50

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Erik Fromm (Swedesboro, NJ/Kingsway Regional) scored a game-high 20 points to lead Gettysburg past Swarthmore 67-50 in Centennial Conference (CC) action on Saturday.
 
Gettysburg (14-9, 10-6 CC) has won nine of their last 11 games while Swarthmore (4-19, 3-13 CC) is on a seven-game losing streak.
 
Fromm led three Bullets scoring in double figures. Dan Capkin (Wynnewood, PA/Lower Merion) tied his career-high of 15 points and Mike Spadafora (Richboro, PA/Archbishop Wood) tallied 10 points in the win.

Swarthmore erased Gettysburg's 25-21 halftime lead by starting the second half on a 11-6 run. The Garnet took the lead on free throw by Dillon McGrew. The Bullets and Garnet would trade the lead five times before Joe Spierenburg (Chambersburg, PA/St. Maria Goretti [MD]) made a layup to give Gettysburg a 33-32 advantage with 15:26 remaining.

The Bullets would not trail the rest of the game and finished the contest on a 34-18 run.

Following Spierenburg's basket, Spadafora would make a layup and get fouled on the play increasing the Gettysburg lead to 36-32. Forty-one seconds later, Capkin nailed his first of three second-half 3-pointers.
 
With 12:08 to go, Capkin hit his second 3-pointer to give the Bullets their first double-digit lead at 44-34. His third 3-pointer put the Bullets up 14 points with 8:27 remaining, 52-38.
 
Gettysburg would then cruise to the 67-50 victory.
 
Swarthmore jumped out to a quick start, taking an early 13-4 advantage on a 3-point play by Steve Wolf with 13:44 to go in the first half. Wolf scored 11 first-half points to lead Swarthmore's offense.
 
Fromm keyed the Bullets comeback by scoring six consecutive points in the span of 58 seconds, cutting the Garnet lead to 16-13. Matt Kurman made a jumper to increase the lead to five, but then Fromm scored two more consecutive baskets to cut the lead to 18-17 with 6:11 to go.
 
Gettysburg and Swarthmore would trade the lead several times before Gettysburg closed the half on a 3-pointer by Spadafora with nine seconds remaining. The Bullets went to the locker room with a 25-21 lead.
 
Brian Sateja (Morristown, NJ/Delbarton School) and Spierenburg led Gettysburg with 6 rebounds each as the Bullets enjoyed a 38-31 advantage on the glass. Michael Bonesteel grabbed a game-high 8 rebounds in the loss.
 
Spierenburg, who is tied for second in the CC in blocks per game, tied his career high by swatting four shots in the game.
 
Kurman led the Garnet with 18 points.
 
The Bullets return to action on Wednesday at Johns Hopkins. Game time is 7 p.m.
