SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Jennifer Bengel (Timonium, MD/Roland Park Country Day School) scored a career-high 34 points to lead Gettysburg past Swarthmore 71-57 in Centennial Conference (CC) action on Saturday.
The Bullets (15-8, 12-4 CC) have won nine of their last 11 games including four consecutive victories. Swarthmore's season record falls to 9-13 overall and 5-11 in the CC.
Bengel led the hot-shooting Bullets who made 57.8 percent of their shots from the floor during the game. She was 12-of-16 from the floor and 9-of-9 from the charity stripe. Also scoring in double figures for Gettysburg were Jamie Marshall (Pottsville, PA/Nativity B.V.M.) (15) and Kathryn Reilly (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) (14).
Reilly, Marshall, and Bengel would score all 24 points of Gettysburg's game-opening 24-9 run as the Bullets started the game making nine of their first 13 shots. Reilly hit a 3-pointer to put the Bullets up 3-0 and she scored seven points during the game-opening run. Marshall scored seven points during the run and Bengel added 10 points, capping the run with a layup at 10:57 to go in the half.
Swarthmore would turn the tables and go on a 21-13 run to close the half down only seven, 37-30. Leading the charge was Jennifer Stevenson who scored 14 first half points for the Garnet.
Bengel finished the half with 18 points for the Bullets.
Gettysburg opened the second half as hot as they began the first half, hitting 9-of-11 shots to open the second frame. The Bullets increased their lead to 59-39 with 11:24 remaining. Marshall (3) and Bengel (1) keyed the Bullets' offensive surge by hitting four 3-pointers in the span of two minutes and fifty seconds.
Gettysburg would cruise to the 71-57 victory.
Megan Hartman (Lewistown, PA/Indian Valley) grabbed a game-high seven rebounds to lead the Bullets who enjoyed a 31-22 advantage on the glass. Reilly chipped in with six boards and Bengel finished with five. Bengel needs 14 rebounds to break Gettysburg's career rebounding record held by Megan Malloy '99 (912).
Stevenson would finish the game with 21 points and Debbie Farrolly added 11 in the loss.
The Bullets return to action on Tuesday at home against Johns Hopkins. Game time is 7 p.m.
