Gettysburg powers past Johns Hopkins 65-58; Bullets clinch No. 3 seed

BALTIMORE, Md. – Mike Spadafora (Richboro, PA/Archbishop Wood) scored a game-high 23 points to lead Gettysburg past Johns Hopkins 65-58 in Centennial Conference (CC) action on Wednesday.
 
Gettysburg (15-9, 11-6 CC) completed the season sweep of the Blue Jays (17-6, 13-4 CC) and the Bullets clinched the No. 3 seed in upcoming CC championship tournament with tonight's win. This year marks the first time since the 2001-02 season that Gettysburg has swept Johns Hopkins in a season series.
 
Spadafora led three Bullets scoring in double figures. Forwards Brian Sateja (Morristown, NJ/Delbarton School) and Erik Fromm (Swedesboro, NJ/Kingsway Regional) each tallied 12 points for Gettysburg who outscored Johns Hopkins 38-22 in the paint.

The Bullets also enjoyed a 39-24 rebounding advantage, led by Todd Brady (Hancock, NH/ConVal) who grabbed a game-high seven boards.
 
With 16:35 remaining in the game and Gettysburg holding a 29-27 advantage, the Bullets went on a 13-4 run to increase their lead to 42-31. During the run, 12-of-13 Gettysburg points were scored in the paint, capped by layup from Fromm with 11:05 to go.

A jumper by Julius Redd (Gaithersburg, MD/Magruder) gave the Bullets their largest lead of the game at 56-44 with 3:39 remaining.

The Blue Jays wouldn't give up and began to close the scoring margin. On their next possession, Danny Nawrocki answered by hitting a layup and making the ensuing free throw after being fouled by Redd on the play.
 
The Bullets turned the ball over and Matt Griffin hit a bucket and cut the lead to 56-49 with 2:53 to go. Griffin and Nawrocki proceeded to score the next six points, leaving Gettysburg with only a 58-55 advantage with 1:19 left on the clock.
 
The Blue Jays were able to cut the lead to two with 33 seconds left, but Gettysburg went 6-of-6 from the free throw line to close the game and hold on for the 65-58 win.
 
The Bullets opened the game on a 12-4 run keyed by 3-pointers from Spadafora and Joe Spierenburg (Chambersburg, PA/St. Maria Goretti [MD]).

Gettysburg would not trail the rest of the game and used 10 points and six rebounds from Sateja in the first half to take a 25-21 lead into the locker room.
 
Nawrocki would finish with a team-high 17 points and Chris Morley led the Blue Jays with a game-high seven rebounds.
 
The Bullets return to action on Saturday at home against Dickinson. Game time is 2 p.m.
