GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Dan Capkin (Wynnewood, PA/Lower Merion) scored a career-high 18 points and Mike Spadafora (Richboro, PA/Archbishop Wood) tallied 19 points to lead Gettysburg to an overtime win against Dickinson 77-70 in Centennial Conference (CC) action on Saturday.
Gettysburg (16-9, 12-6 CC) ends the regular season having won 11-of-13 games while Dickinson ends its season with a 6-19 overall record.
Brad Litchfield scored a game-high 27 points for the Red Devils and no points were more important than the 3-pointer he hit at the end of regulation to tie the game at 62, forcing overtime. With seven seconds remaining, he dribbled the length of the floor and ended behind the arc about 15 feet away from the baseline on the right side of the floor. The guard, falling off balance, lofted the ball over the 6-6 Erik Fromm (Swedesboro, NJ/Kingsway Regional) with one second to go. The ball rolled around the rim once, and dropped in for the tie.
However, Dickinson could not keep the momentum in extra frame. On senior day, Capkin, a freshman, came up big for the Bullets. He scored eight points in overtime to lead his team to victory.
After trading several baskets, Spadafora hit 3-pointer to put the Bullets up 68-64 with 2:15 to go. Dickinson countered with a layup from Mike Geosits.
Capkin then scored the next five points. With 1:28 left on the clock, he split the Red Devil zone and was fouled as he made a scooping layup. He hit the ensuing foul shot and proceeded to make two more free throws on the next Bullet possession.
Dickinson's Cory Kenny nailed a 3-pointer to cut the lead to 74-40 with 33 seconds left, but Spadafora made one and Capkin made two free throws to ice the game.
The Red Devils opened the game with a 19-10 run to take a commanding lead with 8:50 left in the first half. However, Gettysburg chipped away at the lead and cut it to 29-27 half on a jumper from Brian Sateja (Morristown, NJ/Delbarton School) with 29 seconds left in the frame. Sateja scored seven points in the first half and Spadafora's eight points led the Bullets. Litchfield tallied eight point for Dickinson.
The second half featured seven ties and seven lead changes. Spadafora would score the first four Bullet points in the half to tie the game at 31 with 17:20 on the clock.
Dickinson would reclaim the lead and push its advantage to four points, 37-33, on a jumper from Matt Keys. The Bullets would close the gap on a Sateja basket with 12:03 left in regulation.
Gettysburg would take the lead on a 3-pointer by Capkin, but Litchfield answered by scoring seven consecutive points to give Dickinson a 45-41 advantage. Litchfield made two 3-pointers in a row and was fouled on the second one, making his free throw for the rare four-point play.
Kyle McGlensey (West Chester, PA/West Chester East) hit two free throws as the Bullets recaptured the lead at 48-46 with 6:49 to go. His baskets started a 9-0 run for Gettysburg which was keyed by a 3-pointer from Capkin.
However, Dickinson rallied to cut the lead to 57-56 with 1:37 remaining. Gettysburg made 5-of-6 free throws down the stretch before Litchfield made two 3-pointers in the final 16 seconds to tie the game and force overtime.
Gettysburg made 32-of-45 free throws on the day led by Capkin's 8-of-9. The Bullets outscored the Red Devils by 19 points from the charity stripe.
Geosits scored 13 points and grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds in the loss.
Sateja ended with 10 points, McGlensey added nine points, and Fromm tallied eight points while Spadafora grabbed a team-high eight boards for the Bullets..
Gettysburg, the No. 3 seed in the CC tournament, returns to action on Saturday against Johns Hopkins at Ursinus. Game time is TBD.
