Gettysburg falls to Dickinson, 56-47; Bengel becomes all-time rebounding leader

Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. –  Dickinson (18-6, 14-4) used a double-double from Ally Teatom and a game-high 17 points from Patrice Johnson to pick up their 14th Centennial Conference (CC) win of the season over Gettysburg (15-10, 12-6), 56-47, on Saturday.

In the loss, Jennifer Bengel (Timonium, MD/ Roland Park Country School) pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds, giving her 921 career rebounds to surpass Megan Malloy (1995-99) for first place on the Gettysburg all-time rebound list. Malloy finished her career with 912 rebounds. Bengel also picked up another career milestone on the afternoon as she dished out two assists to surpass the 200 career assist plateau. She now has 201.

After a tightly contested first half where no team led by more than five points and the game saw three ties and four lead changes, the second half began with a Gettysburg scoring drought that allowed the Red Devils to mount a considerable lead.

By the time the Bullets put their first second half points on the board on a foul shot from Katie Reilly (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) with eight minutes and eight seconds of the second period elapsed,  Dickinson had put themselves ahead by 12 points.

Jamie Marshall (Pottsville, PA/Nativity B.V.M.) narrowed the lead back to single digits on a three-pointer following Reilly's free throw.

However, the Red Devils answered with three consecutive baskets over the next minute and 26 seconds. The jumper from Teatom and back-to-back baskets from Johnson gave the Red Devils their largest advantage of the game of 43-29 with 9 minutes and 17 seconds left to play.

Down by nine with under seven minutes to play, Amy Tarbell (Westminster, MD/East Greenwich [RI]) sandwiched her only two buckets of the game into consecutive offensive possessions. Both of her baskets to close the gap to five points came on putbacks ensuing offensive rebounds for the senior.

The Bullets continued to scratch away at the Dickinson lead as Katie Eiden (Silver Spring, MD/Georgetown Visitation [DC]) converted a layup at the 4:12 mark to make it a five-point game.

A jumper from Laura Houseal and a free-throw from Teatom stretched the Red Devil lead back to eight with just over two minutes left to play.

Eiden closed the margin back to within five again, nailing a clutch three-pointer with a minute and 43 seconds to go.

Bengel made it a four-point game on a foul shot with a minute and a second remaining, and Gettysburg began fouling to stop the clock.

Teatom hit two consecutive free throws to put Dickinson back up by six, but a Bengel layup on the other end put the margin right back to four.

Bengel was fouled rebounding the missed front-end of a one-and-one, and she hit the first of two free throws to put the Bullets back to within three with 27 seconds showing on the scoreboard.

In the waning seconds, Dickinson made good of their opportunities at the charity stripe and Gettysburg was unable to hit on their hurried opportunities. The Red Devils built their lead back to nine points in a 14 second span.

Bengel led the Bullets in scoring with 13 points to go along with her 12 rebounds. Marshall finished with 10 points. Reilly pulled down ten boards on the afternoon.

Behind Johnson's 17 points, Teatom had sixteen to go along with her 11 rebounds for the Red Devils. Houseal finished with 10 points and a game-high five steals.

Gettysburg, the No. 5 seed, returns to action at No. 4 McDaniel on Wednesday in a first-round game of the CC tournament. Game time is TBD.
