McDaniel beats Gettysburg 79-63 in first round of CC Playoffs

WESTMINSTER, Md. – Katy Powell scored 25 points to lead McDaniel past Gettysburg 79-63 in the first-round game of the Centennial Conference (CC) Playoffs on Wednesday.

McDaniel (19-7) advances to the CC semifinals with the win while Gettysburg finishes its season with a 15-11 record.
 
Jennifer Bengel (Timonium, MD/Roland Park Country Day School) led Gettysburg with a game-high 29 points on 10-of-18 shooting from the floor and 9-of-12 from the charity stripe. On the night she eclipsed 1,700 career points, becoming the fourth-leading scorer in CC history with her total of 1,701 points.
 
Gettysburg opened the game on a jumper by Kathryn Reilly (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) to make the score 2-0, ten seconds into the game. Powell countered with a jumper of her own to tie the score and McDaniel proceeded to take the lead on a pair of free throws by Kristy Costa with 17:49 to go. The Green Terror would not trail the rest of the game.
 
Nine points was McDaniel's largest advantage in the half, but they went to the locker room with only a 33-27 lead. Powell led the Green Terror with nine points in the first half and Costa grabbed eight rebounds in the half. Bengel led Gettysburg with 11 points in the first frame.
 
McDaniel opened the second half on a 16-6 run to expand their lead to 49-33 with 14:35 left in the game. Gettysburg countered with a 3-pointer by Jamie Marshall (Pottsville, PA/Nativity B.V.M.), but the next time down the floor Powell hit a 3-pointer to reclaim the 16-point lead.
 
Bengel would score 17 points in the final 12:09 in the game, but the Bullets were not able to put a dent in the McDaniel lead. The Green Terror made 10-of-11 free throws in the final seven minutes of the game to maintain their advantage and ultimately win 79-63.
 
Costa finished the game with a double-double (13 points, 11 rebounds) and Sara Franz finished with 14 points.
 
Reilly scored 10 points and Marshall tallied eight points. Bengel and Amy Tarbell (Westminster, MD/East Greenwich [RI]) each grabbed seven rebounds to lead the Bullets.
