COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Danny Nawrocki scored 16 points to lead five Blue Jays in double figures as Johns Hopkins beat Gettysburg 78-66 in the semifinals of the Centennial Conference Playoffs.
Johns Hopkins (18-7) advances to play Ursinus in the CC Finals tomorrow and Gettysburg ends their season with a record of 16-10.
Erik Fromm (Swedesboro, NJ/Kingsway Regional) scored a career-high 28 points to pace Gettysburg and Mike Spadafora (Richboro, PA/Archbishop Wood) added 16 points for the Bullets.
Johns Hopkins jumped out to an early 18-9 lead on a layup by Chris Morley. Fromm countered with a layup and Spadafora added another as Gettysburg would go on a 19-14 run to close the half to cut the score to 32-28. Fromm scored 14 points during the run to finish the half with 18.
To open the second half, Gettysburg and Johns Hopkins traded baskets before Dan Capkin (Wynnewood, PA/Lower Merion) drilled a 3-pointer to cut the score to 36-33. However, the three-point gap was as close as Gettysburg would get.
The Blue Jays scored five consecutive points to take a 41-33 lead with 15:33 to go on a T.J. Valerio 3-pointer. Next time down the floor, Spadafora went to the hoop and was fouled. He converted the traditional 3-point play before Johns Hopkins scored five more consecutive points to take a ten point lead with 12:22 left in the half.
Gettysburg cut the lead to 55-49 on a 3-pointer by Matt Whelan (Ridgefield, CT/Ridgefield) with 9:11 on the clock.
Johns Hopkins would make 13 free throws down the stretch to maintain and extend their lead to as many as 17 points. Spadafora scored six of his 14 second half points in the final 4:46 of the game, but the game ended in a Blue Jays' win, 78-66.
Nawrocki scored his 1,000th career point in the game. Joining him in double-figures were Morley (12), Valerio (11), Jeff Thompson (13), and Matt Griffin (10).
In contrast to their two regular-season meetings, Johns Hopkins held a 31-17 advantage on the glass. Nawrocki led the Blue Jays with eight rebounds while Fromm grabbed a team-high four boards for the Bullets.
