Gettysburg holds off late rally by Washington,wins 81-79

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Jennifer Bengel (Timonium, MD/Roland Park Country Day School) scored a game-high 24 points and grabbed a game-high seven rebounds to lead Gettysburg past Washington in Centennial Conference (CC) action on Saturday.
 
With the win, the Bullets improve to 13-8 overall and 10-4 in the CC while Washington slipped to 5-16 and 2-12 in the CC.
 
Gettysburg went 12-14 from the free throw line in the last 3:49 of the game, including six free throws by Jamie Marshall (Pottsville, PA/Nativity B.V.M.), to hold off Washington.
 
The Bullets held a 69-62 advantage, their largest of the game, with 2:49 remaining. However, Washington started chipping away at the lead.
 
Each team exchanged a pair of free throws, and then Washington's Regina Barrett hit a 3-point shot to trim the lead 71-67 with 1:34 remaining.
 
After trading baskets, Megan Hartman (Lewistown, PA/Indian Valley) hit two free throws with 56 seconds remaining to give the Bullets a 77-72 advantage.
 
The next possession down the floor, Irene Pastorino was fouled while attempting a 3-pointer. She made all three ensuing foul shots, cutting the Gettysburg lead to 77-75.
 
The Bullets would add to their lead on a pair of free throws from both Hartman and Marshall, but Washington would not surrender. Pastorino hit her fourth 3-pointer of the game to cut the Bullet lead to 79-77 with 21 seconds to go.
 
Marshall would make two more foul shots and then the next time down the floor Kaitlyn Roth hit a layup with 9 seconds remaining to make the score 81-79 in Gettysburg's favor.
 
Marshall was fouled again, but missed both free throw attempts. After a Washington timeout, the Shorewomen inbounded the ball at half court with three seconds left on the clock. Meghan Luterzo took a long 3-point shot that did not make its way into the net, thus preserving the Gettysburg win.
 
Washington started the game with a hot shooting hand, making 48 percent of their shots from the floor in the first half. They opened a 38-35 lead at the half on the strength of 12 points from Elise Conway and 11 from Pastorino. Bengel kept the Bullets in the game with her 12 first-half points.
 
Gettysburg opened the second half on a 10-4 run, keyed by a 3-pointer by Marshall. The Bullets and the Shorewomen would trade the lead four times before Gettysburg took the lead for good with 13:04 to go.
 
Marshall finished the game with 15 points, Kathryn Reilly (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) scored 12 points and Hartman added 11 in the win. Conway finished with a career-high 22 points and Pastorino ended with 19 in the loss.
 
Hartman grabbed six rebounds for the Bullets, while Conway and Brenda Lucas each had six boards for the Shorewomen.
 
Gettysburg made 30-of-39 free throws while Washington was 12-of-16 from the charity stripe.

The Bullets return to action on Tuesday at home against Ursinus. Game time is 7 p.m.
