Ninth-inning rally falls short as Gettysburg loses to Arcadia,10-8

Box Score

TAMPA, Fla. – Gettysburg scored five runs in the ninth inning, but it wasn't enough to down Arcadia who beat the Bullets 10-8 in non-conference baseball action on Thursday.

Win the win, Arcadia (5-4) snapped Gettysburg's (6-5) five-game winning streak.

Down 10-3 entering the bottom of the ninth inning, Gettysburg batted around the lineup and almost tied the game. To start the frame, Brendan McDonald (Bennington, VT/Mt. Anthony Union) and Mark Campo (Arendtsville, PA/Biglerville) led off with back-to-back singles. Campo's hit plated McDonald after he advanced two bases on a pair of wild pitches.

Dave Olson (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) walked and Chase Straub (Perkasie, PA/Pennridge) followed with an RBI single. After the first out of the inning on a groundout to the second baseman, Ben Carey (Colchester, CT/St. Bernard) walked to load the bases.

Joe Bonyai (Torrington, CT/Hotchkiss School) delivered a single that plated Olson. With the bases still loaded, a strikeout marked the second out in the inning. Andrew Freeburger (Baltimore, MD/Parkville) stepped to the plate and Straub scored from third on a wild pitch. Freeburger then hit the ball to the shortstop, but an error allowed Freeburger to reach first safely and also score Carey.

After leading off the inning with a single, McDonald stepped to the plate again with the game-tying run on second. He grounded out to the second baseman and the game ended with Arcadia preserving the win 10-8.

Andy Bella picked up the win for the Knights and John Squire entered in the ninth inning to pick up the save.

Arcadia jumped out to a 7-0 lead after the second inning.  They tacked on two more in the fifth and another in the eighth to finish the game with 10 runs.

In the second inning, McDonald hit a solo home run for the Bullets. Carey and Bonyai each picked up one RBI in the third inning.

Gettysburg returns to action on Friday in a doubleheader against Arcadia in Tampa, Fla. Game time is 12:30 p.m.
