Gettysburg splits a twinbill with Arcadia

Game 1 Box | Game 2 Box

TAMPA, Fla. – Brian Spicer (Haddonfield, NJ/Haddonfield) picked up a complete-game win to lift Gettysburg in the second half of a twinbill with Arcadia in non-conference baseball action on Friday.

In the nightcap, Gettysburg (7-6) won 4-1, but Arcadia (6-5) scored a run in the bottom of the seventh to down the Bullets, 4-3, in game one.

Spicer went the distance and only gave up three hits to the Knights to pick the win. Gettysburg got on the board in the third on an RBI single from Joe Bonyai (Torrington, CT/Hotchkiss School) that plated Sean McGee (Mamaroneck, NY/Mamaroneck).

A big three-run fifth inning increased the Bullets' lead to 4-0. Matt Stillitano (Ewing, NJ/The Hun School of Princeton) led off the inning with a walk. McGee and Ben Carey (Colchester, CT/St. Bernard) hit back-to-back singles that loaded the bases. Taking advantage of runners in scoring position, Bonyai hit a two-run single. Brian Pernice (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown) grounded into a fielders choice, but Carey scored the third run of the inning on the play.

Arcadia would manage to score one run in the top of the seventh, but Spicer would hold on for the complete game victory.

In game one, the Bullets struck first in the fourth on an RBI single from Mark Campo (Arendtsville, PA/Biglerville). However the Knights answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame and they would add another in the sixth.

Down 3-1 entering the seventh inning, Gettysburg rallied to tie the game. The Bullets loaded the bases on two walks and a single. Andrew Freeburger (Baltimore, MD/Parkville) knocked in a run on a fielding error and Bonyai singled home another. The inning ended when pinch-runner Will Kleva (Ocean City, NJ/Ocean City) was thrown out at the plate trying to score on Bonyai's single.

In the bottom of the frame, John Bellis was the hero for Arcadia as he had the game-winning single that scored Eric Console.

Tobin Whitman (Lyme Center, NH/Hanover) pitched his third complete game of the season, but he picked up the loss for the Bullets.

Gettysburg returns to action on Saturday in a doubleheader against Centenary (N.J.) in Tampa, Fla. Game time is 9:30 p.m.
