TAMPA, Fla. – Jeff McAndrew (Medford, NJ/Shawnee) pitched six innings to pick up his first collegiate win in the second half of a twinbill with Centenary in non-conference baseball action on Saturday.
In the nightcap, Gettysburg (8-7) won 6-2, but Centenary overcame the Bullets' five-run first inning to win game one, 7-5. Gettysburg concludes its Spring Break trip to Florida with a 7-3 record in the Sunshine State.
McAndrew and Brian Koch (Union, NJ/Roselle Catholic), who pitched the seventh, held the Cyclones to two runs on five hits.
Gettysburg scored twice in the first to take a 2-0 lead on sacrifice fly by Brian Pernice (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown) and an RBI single by Andrew Freeburger (Baltimore, MD/Parkville).
The Bullets struck again in the third when Ben Carey (Colchester, CT/St. Bernard) crossed the plate on a bases-loaded walk by Freeburger.
Adding two more runs in the fourth and another in the fifth, Gettysburg took a 6-0 lead into the sixth inning. A pair of sacrifice flies by Joe Bonyai (Torrington, CT/Hotchkiss School) and Mark Campo (Arendtsville, PA/Biglerville) plated two of those runs.
Centenary would score one run in the sixth and one in the seventh, but Gettysburg prevailed with McAndrew getting his first collegiate victory.
In game one, the Bullets jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning with the help of five base hits. Sean McGee (Mamaroneck, NY/Mamaroneck) led off the game with a single and he scored on an RBI double from Bonyai. Pernice and Brendan McDonald (Bennington, VT/Mt. Anthony Union) followed with back-to-back singles, plating Bonyai. After a walk that loaded the bases, Campo drove home Pernice on a base knock. Gettysburg scored their other runs on a double steal and on a fielder's choice.
Centenary chipped away at the Bullets' lead. The Cyclones scored three runs in the second and another in the fourth. They then took the lead with a two-run fifth and added an insurance run in the sixth to seal the game.
Gettysburg returns to action on Wednesday at Catholic. Game time is 3 p.m.
