FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Megan Moore (Chestertown, MD/Gunston Day School), Jenn Kelly (Westbury, NY/Carle Place), and Katie Ceglarski (Darien, CT/ Darien) scored three goals apiece to lead No. 5 Gettysburg past Mary Washington in non-conference women's lacrosse action on Thursday.
The Bullets (1-0) win their season opener for the sixth straight year while Mary Washington (1-1) suffered its first loss of the season.
Thirty-six seconds into the game, Gettysburg opened a 1-0 lead on an unassisted goal by Moore. Mary Washington countered less than a minute later on a score by Emily Talbot.
Gettysburg and the Eagles quickly traded goals before the Bullets would score four straight goals to take a 6-2 lead capped by a tally from Krissy Browning (Baldwin, MD/Fallston) with 14:41 left in the first half.
Mary Washington tried to get back into the game with goals by Karen Pickering and Meaghan O'Leary, but Kelly, Ceglarski, and Browning proceeded to score goals to end the half. The Bullets went to the locker room with a 10-4 lead.
Kaitlyn Barker scored twice early in the second half to cut the lead to 10-6 with less than 15 minutes remaining.
Gettysburg would reel off five consecutive goals in the final 12:25 of the game with Jamie Giffuni (St. James, NY/Smithtown) finding the net twice during the stretch.
Goalkeeper Heather Kelley (Berwyn, PA/Conestoga) played well, making five saves for the Bullets. Meredith Pierson made six saves in the loss.
Browning finished the game with two goals while Alexandra Ewing (Baltimore, MD/Garrison Forest) and Jen Betts (Potomac, MD/Academy of the Holy Cross) each found the cage once. Barker led the Eagles with three goals.
Betts, Ewing, and Kelly all assisted two goals on the day.
Gettysburg returns to action on Thursday at home against Rowan. Game time is 4 p.m.
