Catholic knocks 21 base hits in 14-7 win over Gettysburg

Box Score

TAMPA, Fla. – Joseph Maca and Matthew Rosner each had four base hits to lead Catholic past Gettysburg 14-7 in non-conference baseball action on Wednesday.

The Cardinals (11-10-1) used 21 base hits to defeat the Bullets (8-8) who lost their first game since returning from a Spring Break trip to Florida.

Gettysburg jumped on the board first with a four-run first inning. With two outs and the bases loaded, Andrew Freeburger (Baltimore, MD/Parkville) smacked a 3-RBI double that plated Ben Carey (Colchester, CT/St. Bernard), Joe Bonyai (Torrington, CT/Hotchkiss School) and Brendan McDonald (Bennington, VT/Mt. Anthony Union). Freeburger would advance to third on a wild pitch and then score on a passed ball to give the Bullets a 4-0 lead.

Maca and Rosner led off the bottom of the first with back-to-back singles and they both scored later in the inning. Sean McGee (Mamaroneck, NY/Mamaroneck) crossed the plate for the Bullets in the second inning but Catholic proceeded to score one run in both the second and third innings to trail 5-4 going into the top of the fourth.

After a leadoff walk to Bonyai, Brian Pernice (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown) pounded a home run over the left field fence to give the Bullets a 7-4 lead.

Gettysburg held the 7-4 advantage until the bottom of the fifth inning. Robert Soler and Christian Tintle hit one-out singles and Adam Spisak reached safely on an error that scored Soler from third base. Maca, Kevin Sweeney, Kevin Conley, and Joe Benedetti smashed RBI singles to give the Cardinals a 9-7 lead they would not relinquish.

Catholic would score five more runs to close the game as the Cardinals held Gettysburg scoreless in the final five innings of the contest.

Jordan Clark earned the victory despite walking nine batters and giving up six earned runs in six innings of work. Tobin Whitman (Lyme Center, NH/Hanover) picked up the loss for Gettysburg after giving up 12 hits in 4 2/3 innings pitched.

Gettysburg returns to action on Friday for their home-opener against York (Pa.). Game time is 3 p.m.
