Box Score
GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Sophomore midfielder Katie Ceglarski (Darien, CT/Darien) led all scorers with two goals and two assists for four points, and classmate Megan Moore (Chestertown, MD/Gunston Day School) added two goals and an assist to lead No. 5 Gettysburg to a 7-3 win over Messiah in non-conference action Wednesday night at Clark Field.
Senior goaltender Heather Kelley (Berwyn, PA/Conestoga) made nine saves while allowing goals to three different Falcons. The Bullets have now won six straight games to start the season, marking the third time in the last four seasons that has happened. The 2006 edition of the Gettysburg women's lacrosse team is tied with the 1983 and 2004 teams for the program's second-longest winning streak to open a season behind the 2003 squad's 10-game run.
The Bullets (6-0) scored three goals in a 2:13 span early in the first half before the Falcons (1-4) regrouped to slow the pace and draw within one goal early in the second half. Moore opened the scoring with an unassisted goal just 3:53 into the game, and Ceglarski added to the lead less than a minute later on an assist by senior Alexandra Ewing (Baltimore, MD/Garrison Forest). Junior attacker Jen Betts (Potomac, MD/Academy of the Holy Cross) converted a feed from Ceglarski to give Gettysburg the early 3-0 lead.
That score held up for the next 11 minutes until Moore buried a free-position chance midway through the period. It appeared that the half would end that way, but Messiah junior midfielder Megan Duke scored with just 14 seconds to play before halftime. The Falcons continued their comeback early in the second half. Sophomore attacker Jessica VanHook scored at the 6:33 mark. Following a Gettysburg timeout, the visitors gained control again and moved the ball well before scoring on a favorable Messiah bounce. Junior attacker Megan Campbell took a shot that ricocheted off the crossbar, bounced off the back of Kelley's helmet and into the net, closing the gap to 4-3.
The Bullets turned it on after that, answering 23 seconds later on a goal by senior midfielder Jenn Kelly (Westbury, NY/Carle Place). Kelly would also assist on Ceglarski's second goal of the night just over three minutes later.
Gettysburg seemed poised to add more offense, but junior attacker Katie Hagan (Media, PA/Cardinal O'Hara) was denied twice by the posts. The Bullets did not set the final score until sophomore attacker Krissy Browning (Baldwin, MD/Fallston) scored with four seconds left in the game.
Gettysburg closes out its brief two-game home stand on Saturday with a 1 p.m. contest against Ursinus.
