Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Justin Kaplan hit a game-winning single in the top of the ninth inning to lift York (Pa.) over Gettysburg 7-6 in non-conference baseball action on Friday.

The Spartans (9-7-1) scored three runs in the final three innings to win the game while Gettysburg falls to 8-9 on the season.

Gettysburg pitcher Mike Ciancio (Roseland, NJ/Newark Academy) recorded two quick outs to lead off the ninth inning. Then Ryan Poff, York's leading hitter, knocked a double down the right field line.

The Bullets brought in closer Brian Koch (Union, NJ/Roselle Catholic) and the first batter he faced was Kaplan, pinch hitting Bryan Adamson. Kaplan lined a single into right center that plated Poff. It proved to be the game-winner after the Spartans retired Gettysburg 1-2-3 in the bottom of the ninth.

The Bullets opened the game scoring runs in each of the first four innings. Gettysburg loaded the bases in the first inning and Brendan McDonald (Bennington, VT/Mt. Anthony Union) smacked a two-run double down the right field line that scored Ben Carey (Colchester, CT/St. Bernard) and Joe Bonyai (Torrington, CT/Hotchkiss School).

York scored two runs in the top of the second to tie the game at two, but Sean McGee (Mamaroneck, NY/Mamaroneck) scored on a single from Carey as Gettysburg re-took the lead 3-2 in the bottom of the frame.

The Bullets extended their lead to 5-3 after the fourth inning, but the Spartans tallied two runs in the fifth pull within one. Scott Vladyka (Stanhope, NJ/Lenape Valley Regional), who knocked his first collegiate base hit in the fourth, walked with one out in the sixth. He moved around the bases on a fielder's choice and scored on an error, crossing the plate as the Bullets final run of the game.

In the seventh, York scored two runs to pull even with Gettysburg. Poff stroked an RBI single and he later scored on a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 6-6.

A trio of pitchers held Gettysburg scoreless in the final three innings of the game, including Matt Gonzalez who picked up the win and Zac Clark who earned a save for pitching a 1-2-3 ninth.

Ciancio picked up the loss for the Bullets in relief of starter Brian Spicer (Haddonfield, NJ/Haddonfield) who struck out eight batters in 6 1/3 innings pitched.

Gettysburg returns to action on Saturday for a doubleheader as home against No. 20 Ithaca. Game one starts at 12 p.m.
