GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Eric Ferguson went 6-for-7 on the day to lead No. 20 Ithaca in a sweep of Gettysburg in a non-conference doubleheader on Saturday. The Bombers won game one 7-0 and they took the nightcap 5-1.
Meeting for the first time since the NCAA District 2 Championship Game in 1962 when Ithaca claimed a 7-4 victory and advanced to the College World Series, the Bombers improved their overall record to 7-3 while the Bullets (8-11) are on a four-game losing streak.
In game one, Ithaca's Nick Sottung threw a complete-game shutout. His run support came on back-to-back three run innings in the fourth and fifth.
In the first inning Gettysburg had a scoring opportunity when Ben Carey (Colchester, CT/St. Bernard) walked and Joe Bonyai (Torrington, CT/Hotchkiss School) followed with a single to right field. However, the Bombers ended the threat with a double play to end the inning.
Ithaca got on the board first in the third on an RBI single from Jeremy Peters that plated Ferguson. They followed with three runs in the fourth on an RBI single from Ferguson and a two-run double by Todd Czerno.
In the top of the fifth, the Bombers struck again with three more runs. Brendan McDonald (Bennington, VT/Mt. Anthony Union) led off the bottom half with a single, but three straight groundouts ended Gettysburg's inning.
The Bullets rapped three hits in the sixth, but another double play thwarted their inning as Sottung finished with a shutout.
In game two, Ferguson put Ithaca on the scoreboard when his RBI single scored Rob Roux. Gettysburg countered in the third to tie the game at one. Dave Olson (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) walked. An error by the pitcher allowed Sean McGee (Mamaroneck, NY/Mamaroneck) to reach first safely and move Olson to second. Carey followed with a single that scored Olson.
Gettysburg would only manage two more hits the rest of the game as starter Matt Lavoie and Adam Brown combined for a three-hitter in the 5-0 win.
Gettysburg returns to action on Tuesday at McDaniel. Game time is 3 p.m.
