Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Tobin Whitman (Lyme Center, NH/Hanover) struck out 13 for a complete-game win as Gettysburg defeated McDaniel 6-1 in Centennial Conference (CC) action on Tuesday.

Gettysburg (9-11, 1-0 CC) won its conference opener for the second consecutive year as McDaniel falls to 5-9 overall and 0-1 in the CC.

Whitman (2-3) struck out a career-high 13 batters, scattered five hits and allowed only one run to pick up his second complete-game victory of the year.

Whitman struck out the side in the bottom of the first to set the tone for the afternoon. However, the Green Terror put their only run of the day the scoreboard in the second inning. Tom Winerich tripled in Jimmy Dahlgren to take a 1-0 lead.

In the top of the fourth inning, Andrew Freeburger (Baltimore, MD/Parkville) drove a double into the left-centerfield gap that scored Joe Bonyai (Torrington, CT/Hotchkiss School) and Brian Pernice (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown) to give Gettysburg a 2-1 lead that they would not relinquish.

Holding a 2-1 lead until the seventh, the Bullets broke open the game with a 3-run inning. Mark Campo (Arendtsville, PA/Biglerville) led off the frame with a bunt down the third base line for a base hit. He moved to second base on a sacrifice and onto third on a single up the middle by Sean McGee (Mamaroneck, NY/Mamaroneck). Ben Carey (Colchester, CT/St. Bernard) rapped an infield single that loaded the bases. Bonyai then knocked a bases-loaded double that plated Campo and McGee. On the ensuing play, Carey stole home to increase the Bullets' lead to 5-1.

Gettysburg tacked on one more run in the eighth on an RBI triple from Campo to set the final score of 6-1. Campo finished the game 2-for-4 and the plate while Bonyai ended 3-for-5.
