ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – Senior Shannon Kiry (Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) put together her best game of the season, firing a two-hit shutout with nine strikeouts to give Gettysburg a 5-0 win in game one on the way to a sweep of Elizabethtown in non-conference action on Thursday afternoon. The Bullets, who have now won five of their last six games, took advantage of five Blue Jay errors in the nightcap to pick up a 2-1 win.
Senior left fielder Katie Eiden (Silver Spring, MD/Georgetown Visitation [DC]) went 3-for-4 in the opener with a run scored and an RBI, and sophomore centerfielder Heather Sagaities (Hollidaysburg, PA/Hollidaysburg) and sophomore catcher Abbe Miller (Spring City, PA/Owen J. Roberts) both doubled. In game two, freshman pitcher Kristy Rubino (Parsippany, NJ/Parsippany) earned her third straight win by scattering eight hits and striking out five while allowing just one earned run. She is 6-1 on the year.
The Bullets (12-3) burst out of the gates with a three-run first inning in the opener. Eiden hit a one-out single to left and scored on Sagaities' double to right. Miller followed with a double to left, scoring Sagaities. She would eventually score on an Elizabethtown error.
Blue Jays' sophomore pitcher Alex Lee struck out 11 hitters in the game, but Kiry, who improves to 6-2, would not allow the Elizabethtown (5-9) offense to get going. Junior center fielder Kelli Thon led off the bottom of the first with a bunt single. Kiry settled in and retired the next 19 hitters, by which time her teammates had given her a 5-0 lead. The Blue Jays loaded the bases on a pair of walks and a single with one out in the bottom of the seventh, but Kiry got the next two hitters, one on a strikeout and the other on a popup, to end the game.
Gettysburg had added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the fourth on RBI singles from junior second baseman Megan Dean (Olney, MD/Our Lady of Good Counsel) and Eiden.
In the nightcap, Rubino and Elizabethtown sophomore Tanya Konek matched zeroes through three innings. The scoreless game was broken up in the top of the fourth when Ober led off with a bunt single and scored with the aid of a sacrifice bunt by freshman third baseman Jessica Wallick (Chambersburg, PA/Chambersburg) and two Blue Jay errors.
Wallick led off the sixth with a single, and she would score the game winning run when Dean and freshman designated player Tayler Cianciotta (Scotch Plains, NJ/Scotch Plains-Fanwood) both reached on errors.
Gettysburg will be back in action on Saturday for a doubleheader against Muhlenberg that will be both the 2006 home opener and Centennial Conference debut for the team. The first pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
