Box Score
EWING, N.J. – Senior goaltender Heather Kelley (Berwyn, PA/Conestoga) made a career-high tying 10 saves, and sophomore midfielder Katie Ceglarski (Darien, CT/Darien) scored four times to lead No. 5 Gettysburg to a 9-8 win over fourth-ranked defending national champion The College of New Jersey on Thursday night at Lions' Stadium.
Sophomore attacker Krissy Browning (Baldwin, MD/Fallston) added a pair of goals for the Bullets (8-0). TCNJ (2-2) sophomore midfielder Karen Doane led all scorers with five points on four goals and one assist. Freshman attacker Rachel Gordon scored twice on free position shots, and senior midfielder Bridget Bigley scored a free position goal with 11 seconds to play in the game, but it was not enough.
Browning got the scoring started with just 1:30 gone in the first half. Gettysburg threatened to expand the lead just over a minute later when sophomore Megan Moore (Chestertown, MD/Gunston Day School) hit a post, but the team succeeded at the 3:52 mark on the first of Ceglarski's four strikes.
Lions' sophomore midfielder Toni-Anne Cavallo broke the Bullets' mini-run off an assist from Doane, but the visitors jumped out to a 5-1 lead by scoring the next three goals. Browning, Ceglarski and Moore all scored in a 5:06 span midway through the first half, giving Kelley just enough offense to withstand 18 shots on goal from TCNJ.
Ground balls and draw controls were nearly even in the game. The Lions forced nine turnovers to the Bullets' four. There was also a disparity in shots with TCNJ holding a 24-18 edge, but Kelley made up for it with her big night between the pipes.
TCNJ got back into the game with three goals from Doane over the last 10:16 of the first half, including two in a 26-second span late in the period. The Lions closed the gap to 6-4 by halftime.
Ceglarski struck first just 42 seconds into the second half, and the teams alternated goals over the next 23 minutes. Gordon scored a pair of free position goals in that sequence, but she was answered by junior attacker Katie Hagan (Media, PA/Cardinal O'Hara) at the 8:32 mark and by senior attacker Ellie Shihadeh (Malvern, PA/Conestoga) at 23:16. Hagan also had two assists in the game.
Doane pulled TCNJ's deficit to two goals, making the score 9-7 just 13 seconds later, and Bigley's free position goal at 29:49 set the final tally.
Gettysburg senior midfielder Jenn Kelly (Westbury, NY/Carle Place) and sophomore midfielder Cristi Farrell (Broomall, PA/Academy of Notre Dame) tied for the game high with three draw controls each in helping the Bullets to a 12-7 advantage in the category.
The Bullets will return to action on Saturday with a Centennial Conference matchup against Swarthmore. The game with begin at 1 p.m. at Clark Field.
