GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Joe Bonyai (Torrington, CT/Hotchkiss School) went 4-for-4 and Brendan McDonald (Bennington, VT/Mt. Anthony Union) had four RBI to lead Gettysburg to a 13-1 win over McDaniel in Centennial Conference (CC) action on Friday.
Gettysburg's (10-11, 2-0 CC) offense erupted for 18 base hits and starting pitcher Brian Spicer (Haddonfield, NJ/Haddonfield) threw eight strong innings. He struck out eight McDaniel (5-10, 0-2 CC) batters and lowered his team-leading ERA to 2.41.
After a scoreless first inning, the Bullets batted around in the second to take a 5-0 lead. McDonald walked and Dave Olson (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) followed with a double down the left field line. McDonald scored the first run of the game on a fielder's choice and a pop out marked the second out of the inning.
Gettysburg started a two-out rally with a walk and three consecutive hits. Ben Carey (Colchester, CT/St. Bernard) hit a two-run double into the left-centerfield gap. Bonyai followed with an RBI single that plated Carey and then Bonyai scored on a double by Brian Pernice (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown).
The Bullets would add three runs in the third and fourth innings to take an 8-0 lead. In the top of the sixth, Drew Mitchell hit a home run over the left field fence. His solo shot would prove to be the Green Terror's only run of the game.
Gettysburg's bats remained hot in the seventh inning. After back-to-back doubles by Bonyai and Pernice and an RBI single from Andrew Freeburger (Baltimore, MD/Parkville), McDonald hit a three-run homer. His dinger would prove to be the last of the Bullets' seven extra-base hits on the afternoon.
Spicer and reliever Brian Koch (Union, NJ/Roselle Catholic) held McDaniel scoreless for the final two innings and the game ended 13-1 in Gettysburg's favor.
Sean McGee (Mamaroneck, NY/Mamaroneck) went 3-for-4 on the day and McDonald ended 2-for-4.
Gettysburg returns to action on Saturday with a doubleheader at Haverford. Game one starts at 11:30 a.m.
