Shenandoah Earns 6-1 Win Over Gettysburg

Box Score

WINCHESTER, Va. – Back-to-back three-run innings and a strong outing from freshman left-hander Rhys Wolford gave Shenandoah a 6-1 win over Gettysburg in non-conference action Tuesday afternoon at Bridgeforth Field. Three unearned runs by the Hornets in the bottom of the fifth inning turned a scoreless pitchers' duel into Wolford's first career win.

Shenandoah (9-2) junior second baseman Daniel Ziccardy went 2-for-3 and scored twice out of the leadoff spot, while classmate David Jenkins went 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored hitting behind him. Junior left fielder Ryan Anderson also drove in a pair of runs for the Hornets. The junior trio backed a seven-inning effort by Wolford in which he allowed just one run on four hits while striking out four.

Gettysburg (1-4) countered with freshman Christian Force (Shippensburg, PA/Berwick), who held Shenandoah in check until there were two outs in the bottom of the fifth. The rookie right-hander (0-1) struck out the second batter of the inning after junior shortstop Daniel Bowers reached on a fielding error. Bowers was eventually cut down at the plate on a fielder's choice for the second out, but Anderson followed with a two-run single to right field, and senior right fielder Matt McCormick drove in a run with another base hit.

In the top of the sixth inning, junior right fielder Chase Straub (Perkasie, PA/Pennridge) reached on a one-out error, but was stranded at first base. Force got the first two hitters out on ground balls to start the bottom half of the inning, but the next four batters reached base. The big blow was a three-run double by Jenkins, who was thrown out trying to stretch it into a triple, ending the inning.

Gettysburg broke up the shutout in the top of the seventh. Junior third baseman Brian Pernice (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown) hit a one-out single to center. Senior catcher Brendan McDonald (Bennington, VT/Mt. Anthony Union) followed with a ground ball that produced a pair of Hornet errors, putting runners on second and third with one out. Sophomore centerfielder Sean McGee (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) drove in Pernice with a single to right, setting the final score.

Bullets' sophomore Mike Ciancio (Roseland, N.J./Newark Academy) came on in relief to start the bottom of the seventh inning and threw two innings of no-hit ball. The only runner to reach base against him came on a hit batsman, and he picked up a pair of strikeouts.

Gettysburg will kick off its spring break trip on Sunday with a doubleheader against Webster. The first game will begin at 12 p.m. in Tampa, Fla.
