HAVERFORD, Pa. – Ryan Stephens hit a two-run homer to give Haverford an extra-inning victory in game one of a doubleheader against Gettysburg in Centennial Conference (CC) action on Saturday.
Stephens' heroics in the ninth inning gave Haverford (13-10, 4-0 CC) a 6-4 victory in game one while the Black Squirrels pounded 15 hits in game two for a 12-7 win over Gettysburg (10-13, 2-2 CC).
In game one, Haverford jumped out to a 3-0 lead with a three-run first inning, and they added another run in the fourth. Mark Campo (Arendtsville, PA/Biglerville) scored in the second for Gettysburg, and the Bullets battled back to tie the game in the top of the sixth.
Joe Bonyai (Torrington, CT/Hotchkiss School) led off the inning with a single. After a fly out, Andrew Freeburger (Baltimore, MD/Parkville) reached on an error. Dave Olson (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) was then hit by a pitch, which loaded the bases for Campo. He drilled a 3-run double to clear the bases and tie the game at four.
Neither team would score again until Stephens hit his two-run homer to left field to end the game in the ninth, 6-4.
In game two, Gettysburg took an early 3-1 advantage in the second inning. Brian Pernice (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown) hit a solo home run and Olson knocked a two-run homer to give the Bullets the lead.
In the top of the fourth, the Bullets scored two more runs on another dinger. Brendan McDonald (Bennington, VT/Mt. Anthony Union) plated Freeburger on his two-run shot, giving Gettysburg a 5-2 advantage.
Then in the bottom of the frame, Haverford tied the game at five. The Black Squirrels proceeded to score three runs again in the both the fifth and sixth innings to take a commanding lead. Tim McLean went 4-for-5 in game two for Haverford as the Black Squirrels prevailed 12-7 in the nightcap.
Gettysburg returns to action on Tuesday at home against Franklin & Marshall. Game one starts at 3:30 p.m.
