Rubino breaks Gettysburg single-season strikeout record in CC-opening sweep of Muhlenberg

Game 1 Box | Game 2 Box

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Freshman pitcher Kristy Rubino (Parsippany, NJ/Parsippany) collected eight strikeouts in the nightcap of a Centennial Conference (CC) sweep of Muhlenberg on Saturday afternoon to break the 18-year-old Gettysburg single-season strikeout record. The Bullets came back with three runs in the bottom of the sixth to win the game 6-5 after senior Shannon Kiry (Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) threw a three-hitter to win the opener 2-1.

In just nine appearances, Rubino has amassed 71 strikeouts, breaking the Gettysburg record of 69 set by Jodi Lopiano in 1988. Muhlenberg (7-13, 0-2 CC) sent 10 hitters to the plate against her in the top of the second inning to jump out to a 5-0 lead, but the Bullets (14-3, 2-0 CC) clawed back with single runs in the second, fourth and fifth innings and a three-run outburst in the bottom of the sixth.

Freshman third baseman Jessica Wallick (Chambersburg, PA/Chambersburg) drove in a run with a groundout in the fourth inning. She got her second RBI of the game with a  single to left center field in the sixth and came around to score on a two-run triple by freshman designated player Tayler Cianciotta (Scotch Plains, NJ/Scotch Plains). The three-bagger also plated senior right fielder Margaret Hallahan (Huntingdon, PA/Huntingdon) with the game-winning run.

The Mules put runners on second and third base with one out in the top of the first, but could not score. The visitors would change that in the second inning, when they collected five hits and took advantage of two Gettysburg errors to plate five runs.

In the opener, which was the CC opener for both teams and the home opener for Gettysburg, Kiry retired the first 10 batters of the game before freshman third baseman Samantha Crist doubled and scored on a fielder's choice by classmate RiRi Ferrigno. Kiry struck out the next hitter to end the inning and ultimately retired 10 of the last hitters to come to the plate in the game. She struck out seven in the game without walking a batter to improve to 7-2.

The Bullets got their only two runs of the game in the second inning when freshman first baseman Erin Ober (Lutherville, MD/Dulaney) and Hallahan sandwiched tripled around an error that allowed Wallick to reach base.

Muhlenberg junior Nicole Washburn, who fell to 5-2, had three strikeouts and allowed six hits in six innings of work. Gettysburg threatened to score a few insurance runs, getting runners at least as far as second base in three of its last four turns at the plate, but Washburn pitched out of trouble each time.

The Bullets return to action on Tuesday when they will entertain Susquehanna in a non-conference doubleheader at Bobby Jones Field. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m.
