GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Jenn Kelly (Westbury, NY/Carle Place) and Jen Betts (Potomac, MD/Academy of the Holy Cross) each recorded a hat trick as No. 5 Gettysburg defeated Swarthmore 15-3 in Centennial Conference (CC) action on Saturday.
Gettysburg (9-0, 3-0 CC) is in the midst of the program's second-longest season-opening winning streak, trailing the record of 10 straight games set by the 2003 squad. Swarthmore drops to 9-2 overall and 1-2 in the CC.
The Bullets scored seven goals, including three from Kelly, in the first 13:10 of the game to take a commanding 7-0 lead en route to an 11-1 halftime advantage. Kelly struck 56 seconds into the game with a goal off a pass from Ellie Shihadeh (Malvern, PA/Conestoga). Unassisted, Kelly also scored the second goal of the contest.
Betts and Megan Moore (Chestertown, MD/Gunston Day School) each scored in the span of 19 seconds to increase the Bullets' advantage to 4-0, just 6:38 into the game.
Moore and Katie Ceglarski (Darien, CT/ Darien) each tallied a goal before Kelly netted her hat trick on an assist from Krissy Browning (Baldwin, MD/Fallston) with 16:49 left in the first half.
Betts scored her second goal of the game before Swarthmore's Anna de Regt put the Garnet on the scoreboard. Megan Sanborn found a streaking de Regt who found the back of the cage to make the score 8-1 in favor of Gettysburg.
The Bullets scored three more goals before halftime to take an 11-1 advantage into the locker room.
Gettysburg's offense picked up right where it left off at the start the second half. Alexandra Ewing (Baltimore, MD/Garrison Forest) scored 3:14 into the period on an assist from Kelly that completed her four-point day.
Shihadeh and Browning each tallied unassisted goals before Swarthmore got late strikes from Melissa Grigsy and Lindsay Roth that set the final score at 15-3.
Heather Kelley (Berwyn, PA/Conestoga) and Susan Meyers (Ridgewood, NJ/Immaculate Heart) combined to make six saves in goal for the Bullets in the win.
Gettysburg returns to action on Wednesday at home against Franklin & Marshall. Game time is 6 p.m.
