Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Matt Stillitano (Ewing, NJ/The Hun School of Princeton) knocked a two-run triple, and Dave Olson (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) followed with a game-winning sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth inning to give Gettysburg a 20-19 win over Dickinson in Centennial Conference (CC) action on Tuesday.

After three hours and 46 minutes, Gettysburg (11-17, 3-6 CC) and Dickinson (10-14-1, 3-3-1) combined for 39 runs, 38 hits and 17 extra-base hits in a wild game that had five ties and six lead changes. Every player in both the Bullets and Red Devils' starting lineups had a least one hit and scored at least one run in the game. Dickinson was only held scoreless in the eighth inning when Brian Pernice (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown) struck out the side while Gettysburg scored in 5-of-9 innings.

The last time Gettysburg put 20 runs on the scoreboard was on Apr. 15, 2003 when ironically, the Bullets defeated Dickinson 22-19.

Olson led Gettysburg by going 3-for-5 with 5 RBI while teammate Andrew Freeburger (Baltimore, MD/Parkville) was 3-for-5 with 3 RBI. Luke Volker led Dickinson with 6 RBI, including a 3-run homer in the sixth, and Ryan Stearrett went 4-for-6 in the loss.

With Gettysburg leading 17-16 heading into the top of the ninth, the Red Devils rallied to score three runs. Stearrett doubled home pinch runner Daniel McAlaine. Volker hit a sacrifice fly that scored Stearrett and an RBI single by Matt Bock gave Dickinson a 19-17 advantage. Brian Koch (Union, NJ/Roselle Catholic) came in and retired one batter in relief after Bock's single.

With one out in the bottom of the ninth, Mark Campo (Arendtsville, PA/Biglerville) singled into right field to give Gettysburg a base runner. Freeburger followed with a single through the right side, and Campo advanced to third base on the play. With one out and runners on first and third, Stillitano came up with a clutch hit. He drove the ball over the center fielder's head and off the fence for a triple. Both Campo and Freeburger scored to tie the game at 19-19. The next batter, Olson, ended the game on a sacrifice fly to right field that scored the speedy pinch runner, Will Kleva (Ocean City, NJ/Ocean City). Koch picked up his first win of the season after throwing 1/3 inning.

Dickinson jumped out to an 8-2 lead in the fifth inning. Gettysburg tied the game with a 6-run fifth. The Bullets got four hits, including a 2-run single from Olson in the frame.

The Red Devils proceeded to score six more runs in the top of the sixth to take a 14-8 lead. Volker's three-run homer highlighted the rally. However, Gettysburg put together back-to-back six run innings to knot the game at 14-14. The Bullets got RBI base hits from Brendan McDonald (Bennington, VT/Mt. Anthony Union), Freeburger, Stillitano, Olson and Ben Carey (Colchester, CT/St. Bernard) in the bottom of the sixth.

Taking the lead again, Dickinson scored two runs in the top of the seventh, but Gettysburg plated three in the bottom of the frame to take its first lead of the game, 17-16. After the scoreless eighth, the ninth-inning's action determined the 20-19 final outcome.

Matt Catania, Stearrett, Christopher McInerney and Bock each hit two doubles in the game for the Red Devils. Pernice doubled twice for the Bullets in the win.
